Found my new square through a friend last friday and it was delivered today. Missing a few parts but I am very excited to be part of this small club Laughing Laughing

Jeremy Frazier

Model owned - Squareback
Drive - LHD
Body Colour - Pearl White-ish
Interior - Pigalle
Chassis / Frame # 366 024 7xx
Build Date - August 1965 I believe
Initially Delivered to - ??
Currently in - San Diego California
Condition - Original.

Coloured interior Parts Present -
Steering Wheel, Steering Column, Indicator/Turn Signal Switch, Door cards, Front and Rear arm rests, Rear Seat upholstery and frames, Carpets not sure, Heater Remote Control Covers on Kick Panel on drivers side, Rear Parcel Shelf Cover and Door Pinch Welt (2 tone).

Black Interior Parts –
Gear shift boot, Hand/Emergency Brake Boot, and Horn Button.

A few things missing that will have to be replaced. I have a set of lowbacks for the front to replace the high backs that came with it. I think I am going to keep every thing that is red and whats missing will be replaced with black and red for a bit of contrast. The full Pigalle is too much for me, not to mention trying to find a new dash, I think black and red interior will look awesome. I am going to start a new thread with all my pics for the restore process. Im probably going to need a lot of encouragement....... Rolling Eyes

Rifph post some pics of your square please. I purchased another '66 pearl white squareback with pigalle interior last week. It was in Atlanta on craigslist. Here is an old pic when it was for sale in Tennessee

Vin # 366094xxx. It should be on the road soon once I replace the motor this week.

Great stuff!
We have 12 cars in the "club" now Very Happy .
Thanks to everyone for the info you have posted (keep it coming Wink ).
Rustyfastback, so you have 3 Pigalles now? Shocked - that's amazing!

I've been a bit busy of late, and haven't had much time to spend on the forum, and/or chasing up those leads.
I'll be going to T3D next weekend for their open day, so I'll ask Paul what he can remember about the Square he had - he might have leads to other cars as well.

Here's the updated information...

316003059 Fast Teak/ LHD mr. Nierman Germany
316021117 Fast Pigalle/ Pearl LHD Mike Dempster UK
3660247xx Square Pigalle/ Pearl LHD Jeremy Frazier USA
316039380 Fast Teak/ Pearl LHD Juha Finland
316055289 Fast Pigalle/Black LHD K Kontio Finland
366066xxx Square Pigalle/Pearl LHD "rustyfastback" USA
366094xxx Square Pigalle/Pearl LHD "rustyfastback" USA
316136xxx Fast Pigalle/Pearl LHD "rustyfastback" USA 366230670 Square Pigalle/Pearl LHD ex T3D ??
366676020 Square Pigalle/Pearl LHD Deceased USA
366xxxxxx Square Pigalle/Pearl LHD Phillip Bradfield USA
316xxxxxx Fast Pigalle/Pearl RHD F Quariant? Belgium

It's interesting to note that we still don't have 2 cars made in the same day. The closest pair would seem to be Jeremy's Square and my Fastback, which would seem to be made 3 - 4 days apart.

Jason,
If you need any pics or info for the site let me know.
I have the above info in Excel, I can shoot you a copy if it is any use.

Bye for now...

Mike.

ok here it comes

apparently this post is not for the faint at heart or the ones with short breath. be warned. the others bear with me... Very Happy

ok i have a 66 fastback and it is a teak.

but it is not any longer in complete or near complete state...

i bought the car around 2000 and it was in a bad state. it was fully soaked in water so the carpets were gone. the front airintakes had no hoses on them for years (???) and it soaked the whole car. the front seat was also in very sorry state. it was ripped and torn and the bases of both seats were really in bad state.

it also had been repainted in orange peel seasand. probally a very rare option as well

so a full resto was in order.

keep in mind that i didn't know the rarety of the car.

so everything from the enteriour that was not in very good condition was trown out and put in the dustbin. a lot of the cloth seats were lost this way. the dash was kept as were the armrests. but these were in a very bad state. both of them had chips and cracks.

so fastforward a couple of years and we get to last years summer. the car has by than a new interiour with most of the salvageble parts except for the seatcovers and a brand new brown metallic paint.
it needed some parts to finish of the resto and that is when i met Bert3. after a couple of talks he asked me the condition of my dash (as they tend to be cracked at the speakergril)
so my reply was: yes yes it is nice, nice and brown and no colour fading or cracks.
brown??? he replies. do you know what you have?

that is when i got in the know of teak and pigalle type3's. that is oktober or november last year.

so i am quite pleased to have such a rare car. but on the other hand it is not in original order or state. and it wont be till i have the money and desire to repaint it back to seasand.

i might however be up to have the seats and interiour redone in original teak cloth and vinyl, but i have not a lot of parts left that i can use.

so if you are still with me at this point... i can say that it will probally be restored to its original state one day if i ever can collect all the missing pieces.

the stats of the car

i am probally the third owner

previous owner trashed it and made a ratlook out of it

first owner is a belgian guy that had his car registered in early december in kontich belgium

i purchased the car there from the second owner

the chassis number is 316 101 898

it has a couple of papers under the seat that says 16th november.
so it is late 65.

it had most of the same things that people said in the posts above.
no brown handbrakeboot, pedals or shifterrubber.

otherwise it had the look of the other teaks but in sorry state. it is also a seasand fastback without sunroof or other special options as far as i know.

thanks for reading

and if i can help replying questions i will be glad to help
(and if someone can help me that would be great as well)

regards

nicolas

Is the original color of your car Sea Sand?
I didn't think you could order a Sea Sand car with a Teak interior.

yes

every part that was not painted afterwards is seasand in its original colour. inside of the doors, glovebox, inside fenders. so i am pretty sure it was seasand to start with. never found any white paint

Ooops, I see in the Type 3 color charts that Teak was an option for Sea Sand cars. Usually Teak is always with Pearl White cars. Very cool!

Thanks Nicolas,

It was great to meet you the other week at T3D and learn about your Teak.
I know of another Sea Sand Teak in Germany, which may be the the first one in the list below.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

From what I know both interiors were available in 2 colours each;
Both in Pearl White and then Pigalle in Black + Teak in Sea Sand.

I also had the chance to speak to Francis Quariant at the T3D open day, he's the guy who owns the RHD Pigalle that came from the UK, and he also owns a LHD Pigalle as well! Shocked
It seems that Belgium is a real hot spot for Teak and Pigalle activity - this side of the Atlantic at least!

I'm hoping that I can get more details of his cars in the near future, as soon I hear back from him, but I've added it to my list

I've also added the Teak ebay squareback. I contacted the seller, but it seems he doesn't want to give any information away. Hopefully the next owner will be a little more helpful...

Here's the updated list - 15 cars confirmed so far Very Happy

316003059 Fast Teak/ LHD Mr Nierman Germany
316021117 Fast Pigalle/ Pearl LHD Mike Dempster UK - ex Belgium

316055289 Fast Pigalle/Black LHD K Kontio Finland
366066xxx Square Pigalle/Pearl LHD "rustyfastback" USA
366094xxx Square Pigalle/Pearl LHD "rustyfastback" USA
316101898 Fast Teak/Seasand LHD Nicolas Wilmus Belgium
316136xxx Fast Pigalle/Pearl LHD "rustyfastback" USA
366230670 Square Pigalle/Pearl LHD ex T3D ??
366676020 Square Pigalle/Pearl LHD Deceased USA

Not over here, I have seen a lot more seesand/teak than perlweiß/teak-cars.

Did we have any T34 so far? They also look good with teak and (even better from my point of view) pigalle:

hey all i have been looking at a type3 manual from 69 and it says that indeed pigalle was only produced on a short term. i says that you could have a pigalle with pearl white body up to chassis number 316 140 226 (which is the last car from the line in december 65), but nothing is mentioned about the pigalle in black or even the teak with white or seasand color. did they forgot to mention it in the book???

and what strikes me also is the fact that you could order a seasand teak in 67... is this a different interieur? or is it just the brown parts replaced by black parts.

so many questions about these little oddities

Yes, you could order Teak later but this was primarily brown cloth on the seats. The dash and carpet and other parts went back to their standard colors - black or otherwise.

This is one of 3 pics that I have left of mine. This is my uncle and dad helping me prep it for paint in 88-89. Bought it complete for $600 in Fremont, CA running. All Pigalle was there but at that time I had no idea what it was. This was my first car and second VW. All red interior bit that could be removed and tossed were. Column and shaft were painted. Sold it in 93 to a friend who redid all again. She just sold it last year without me knowing. I am still trying to find it. Came from Canada originally. L87 Pigalle. Thats all I know.
