That is one fine car; your wife is so lucky! I kept checking out that Square at the Rally, really a fine and complete example. Broken in well now, eh? |

Just picked up a factory black fastback pigalle. so many questions! This is a rust free fastback. Most of the red interior was coverd in a tan tweed but under the tweed you can see the red peaking out on the armrest The seat bases are still red one has been painted tan but the other is still red. As is the steering column. going to take some work to make it correct but i'm up for the challenge. |

Leo's new 1966 pigalle fasty. VIN puts it NOV 65. Came with a nice motor with dual 42s. Should make for a nice cruiser after some TLC...

Oh man oh man oh man...
Holy Grail to some of us... Black Pig Fasty?
Really?
Stuff of legends; seen in a pic or two, but never in the wild.
Curate that one with love and respect.
5-lug Fuchs and a DCNF motor are just too perfect.

So after taking a good look at this fastback there is no dought in my mind that it is an original black pigalle. With the og black paint in trunk engine bay and dash along with the L41 paint code sticker its for sure a og black car. Now to the interior. The steering colum is red along with one seat base (the othere is red as well just painted tan) and the front and rear arm rest under the tweed is all red allong with all the air vent plates and seat knobs even the washeres for the seat belts are red has me convinced that this is a true pigalle. All i have to do is figure out how to bring it back to what it once was. According to prevous ownere, the person he got it from did not like the red and had a shop put in the tan tweed. If there is anything this greoup can help furthere determin that this car is inded a pigalle please chime in. I have been looking for a fastback for a while now to complet my type 3 collection never imagened it would be a black pigalle. I dident even realiz what i had till my buddy kris pointed out the obvious. I was just happy it was rust free.

Erik,
Dont think i didn't try. What im missing is the seat covers, door panel material, dash and steering wheel. The rest is under paint and glue. If i can clean it up i will do my best to source what's missing and return her to pigalle. I hear it's out there. It just takes the right car to bring it out of peoples stashes, so im hopful that the people that have such parts will see the potentual of this care and contact me. If its not posible it will keep it's tan interior. Its a really clean car and im so excited to be it's next care taker. |

Second fasty I owned was a 66 Swartz Pig. It had long since lost its interior before I got her and was already sprayed Alpine white. It wasnt till I noticed red around the key and black in the headlight buckets did I later realize.
Many years ago..............Plenty of bad decisions later.........

It's tough to pinpoint an original Pigalle or Teak car. There's no real M code for it that I'm aware of. A "birth certificate" may help. However if it's pre chassis number 316 140 226 and an original black car, it's a Pigalle.
Re-creating the interior will be tough but there are some hacks you can use to get by and get it done while you work on collecting original parts. SL652 Scarlet is the paint code for the seat bases and steering column. You could also refinish a steering wheel in this color and have a paint shop mix up a vinyl dye for your dash pad and arm rests, as well as door panels. With proper prep these items would be just as durable as original.
In fact, if it were me I'd buy one of Herman's dash caps with the correct speaker holes (no middle bar) and run that even if I had or could find an NOS original, because who wants to subject an NOS original to deterioration anyways?
Carpet needs to be pigalle as well, and I'm fairly positive shifter and E-brake boots need to be pig as well.
For seat covers, I'd talk to Doug at SMS and see if they'd be willing to make seat covers in matching vinyl to the original pattern for '66 with heat seams- it will take a long time and be very expensive, but it will be worth it as this is the ONE detail that every 1966 restored car gets wrong- they have 1967 pattern seat covers. In fact, most vendors try to gloss over 1966-67 as being the same stuff but it's not. Same with door panels- special 1966- only vertical heat seam pattern. Get the best ones you can find in any color OR see if SMS can heat seam new ones using an original pattern.
I seem to recall having in my piles of junk a complete but slightly worn original Pigalle carpet set. When I get time later this winter or in the spring I'll go pile- diving and pull it out and see just how worn it is. If it's usable you can have it for the cost of shipping.
Also- a nice touch for this car would be an original Type 3 Wolfsburg Crest rubber floor mat set. Most of these you see are black but they also made red- they're tough to find but they do pop up occasionally.
Good luck- I'm jealous. This will be a fun build, Leo! _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for you. And it's good that you have a place indoors to keep it. That car is worth going thru. Do like Tram suggested, and maybe use some of the interior bits in another project (maybe a resto-custom), as the tweed still looks good.

And that pan IS sweet. Very clean, and no big dents in it either. That's a bonus.
Now you need a t-34 to complete the set.
However I'm still waiting for Tram to debut his 66 Azure Square. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Maybe it'll be a Fastback. I figure after all these years of hating on them and pissing off Fastback owners by calling them parts cars maybe I should own one.
But seriously... I have 2 Squarebacks and 5 Mercedes plus my "Motel Berlin" Mercedes morbidly obese fat chick Bus in the project queue, and frankly, Tram is getting tired. I don't know if an Azure is really in my future or not.
My #1 VW goal for 2019 is to get Bayboy's 34 Go-Rilla Cabrio done so I can finally divorce my Samba Spouse and get someone younger and prettier.
Back to Leo's Piggie- I meant to add "and shows USA delivery" to my list of signs this car is a true Piggie.
While I've never been able to factually verify, I've heard from enough people that should have known that the special Teak, Pigalle, and maybe Azure cars were made specifically for the Type 3's official USA debut, and were limited to 1966 model year Type 3s built in 1965- with the exception of the 34, which possibly had these options for the entire 1966 model year run.
Most Americans don't know that the Type 3 had two versions- the Standard, formerly the N, and the Deluxe, formerly the S. I've never found any evidence that a four lug version of the E for Canada ever happened. USA only officially got the Deluxe versions of Type 3 cars until 1973, and never got any interior but Letherette either, while the rest of the world got cloth with leatherette as an upgrade, even in Deluxe models.
I've never seen or heard of a Pigalle or Teak Standard.
I've also never heard or seen a 1965 built 1966 Type 3 black car that was NOT Pigalle, although it very well could have happened in the Euro market.
It seems Teak may not have ever been offered in black cars- only Pearl White and - rarely- Seesand. And Azure, if it ever really existed, likely would have been in Baltic Blue cars only.
I'll repeat the story about the possible Azure sighting I had in 1978-9 at the dealer- it was a Baltic Blue '66 Fastback. I distinctly remember it in my mind as being "just like the brown and red interior cars" and I thought it was fugly, having no idea or even really caring what it *might* have been.
Too bad I didn't have my Polaroid with me that day and was able to see into the future regarding the importance of what I was looking at.
Maybe it was someone's creation. If it was it was an incredibly nice job but nobody would have put this sort of effort into one of these cars then. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
