my guess would be:

1: Having to lift up their legs too high?
2: The bike seems like it would be stronger with the top tube matching up against the rear part of the frame.

You know, you just may be right on that. When I stripped the frame to paint it that top tube was brazed in and the others where welded! I bought that thing at Deer Park from a friend so he would have enought gas money to get back to San Jose, the good old days LOL.
