I thought I'd post my good experience getting my Vanagon tranny overhauled at Advanced Transmissions in Mauldin, South Carolina, south of Greenville. The shop is owned by Leon & Monty Jacobs, a couple of S. African ex-pats with lots of experience on Vanagons. They were recommended to me by Touring Car in Charlotte--another VW shop--as doing good work.
It was fun talking to the brothers. They said my 100,000 mile
tranny showed signs of the 3-4 slider starting to crack and put in
the new model slider, bearings and some other parts. Charged me $780
plus tax for the rebuild ($255 labor, $425 parts) and they give a 12
month or 12000 mile warranty. I have not driven it yet.
They also work on the Vanagon automatics.
