Wow I didn't know they were bolt on either, very interesting info and cool pic thanks vwbus55 .

Kit? So did all the widebed parts sit on top of the standard bed? I see screw holes that look like it's attached to the standard bed rear gate hinge holes. Is that so?
I've not seen one in person. I'd assumed that the standard bed and bulkhead were removed and the wide bed parts were permanently welded on in to replace them. Interesting if they're actually bolt-ons. |

Have you considered simply starting with a nicer bus? I don't know what your skills are, but the race is easier if you can see the finish line. If you are not a runner, don't start off doing a marathon. |

The 306 Kombi had been used to store V8 engines for the last few decades.
Although its shed status is likely why it survived the crusher, one of the unfortunate side effects from that vocation was that it seems more engines were stuffed in there than would allow the cargo doors to close properly.
Consequently, they were forced closed, which resulted in both of them being bowed out at the bottom by a few inches.
I suppose I could have replaced the B Pillar up past the lower hinge mounts, but thought I would see if I could engineer a fix on the original metal.
Only one of the lower hinge screws came out without stripping, so I had to drill out the stubborn one.
Unfortunately, in the process, I messed up the threads on that captive nut so I had to cut into the back of the B Pillar to access the captive nut plate to replace it with a good used one.
Funny how a simple job of removing a cargo door can become an all day venture.
I fashioned a lever out of 3/8 steel plate, drilled a couple holes to line up with the captive nut plate on the lower hinge mounts and commenced persuading the B Pillar to return to its original orientation.
I was reasonably successful.
Now it looks as though I have to go caveman on the doors to bend them back into shape. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

Started out for a drive and never made it out of the driveway. This bumper just is too ratty. I managed to get it somewhat stripped and on its way to being a bit easier to look at.

Swapped out the white wheels for white and green wheels. New tires are 195/75 D load range, old ones were 205/70 95 load rating. Installed 3 hub cap clips too. Looking forward to seeing any difference in handling.

As nice as the original paint is on your bus, those bumpers will look great with a fresh coat of silver-white paint. _________________ Brandon |

Thank you. I hope so. Overall it's in pretty nice condition. Everything came off and apart without stripping or breaking any bolts. I've never hammer and dollied anything, so I thought I'd give it a try on those dents in the middle. I got rid of more than I expected, and am happy with it. The gouges in the metal are staying as well earned character scars. The uprights are pretty dented, and there are a few dents in the towel bar, but what the hell, it's a driver, not a show bus.

I commissioned my daughters boyfriend to create a Pink Floyd motif on the door cards in the cargo area of the 306 Kombi.
Not everyone's cup of Hemlock, but damn, these are cool!

Acting on a consensus amongst posters in this forum, I bought a set of LT 195R15C Thunderers for the Kombi.
This is the stance they create.
I am pleased with them.
(I was fortunate enough to have 3 original to the bus rims in original paint)
They are slightly wider than the Nexen SV820, but still fit in the rear wheel wells.
They are a light truck tire, so have a robust enough sidewall to keep me in my lane I hope.

Well, it’s an improvement, I reckon. I’m pretty happpy with the blades, but the overriders were just beat to hell. The back one had been bent in half, and the overriders were welded on when I got it. C’est la vie.
The color difference is the lighting or phone or whatever.

Trying to reclaim OG paint from under the poorly matched blauweiss that’s been there for more than ten years.

Today I spent scrubbing and wire brushing the bottom of 66 bus in-progress restoration. Removing unknown years of grime and rust from frame and bottom of cargo floor, so I can get some rust protectant on there to preserve what I can. Pulled that heater tube cover off and the tube came with it .

I did a post SStrip lube on my 15 window the other day.
About 900 miles since the 6k service including lube.
Adjusted the valves
Lubed the suspension.
This bus still has one tie rod and the drag link with zerk fittings on the ends.
The roads in my town are particularly bad. The back roads on the trip were better that the local roads. Apart from Mina Road and Tomki.
The bus had gotten squeaky, which bugged me.
I pulled the cab door handles off and smooshed grease into the lock boxes.
Reassembly, and a light smear of lube on the striker plates, and the cab doors shut very nicely, thank you.
I used the ginker can to lube the door hinges, cargo door lock boxes, engine lid hinges and latch.
It's my impression the suspension should be lubed every 3k miles. Yes I lube the suspension and adjust brakes at the 3K service.
It should be lubed more often if driven on bad roads.
adjust link pins at the 6K mile service.
This 1959 Transporter Service Booklet says to bring it to VW for a lube every 1200 miles:
1,200 miles lube:
bigger lube:
30k service:
