Yes looking forward to that FAQ, I'd love to learn how to take mine apart and get all the tumblers sent out to key alike without braking anything

That would be handy for future reference. |
Yes, please do a dedicated brand new thread on it and I can add it to the Split Bus FAQ afterward. |

Finally got around to rebuilding my 67 Westy's driver side RGB. It had considerable play even after replacing the lower outer bearing so I decided to open it up. I followed the rebuild thread and built a few tools along the way. It was much easier than anticipated. The culprit was the inner bearings, both upper and lower. The bottom one was toast. There was some very fine metal shavings in the bottom of the RGB. I cleaned everything, and then cleaned it again.
I
forgot to peen the inner hex nut so I had to take the spring plate and plug out a second time. Used a screw and nail puller. Worked like a champ both times. Dealing with the spring plate was by far the hardest part of it all. And I had to do it twice.
Took it out for a test drive and it was like night and day. I will likely change the trans fluid tomorrow... just because.
Thanks to Erric&Barb and BarryL for advice and inspiration to dig into it.
If anyone needs their RGBs rebuilt, don't be afraid. Just get in there!
Cheers

Set valve clearances, replaced the horn, and did a bit of investigation into why it dies when idling as soon as the choke cuts off - might be an air leak... |

Got the super cool 58 only "Skier" plates on my 58. Just figured out the lettering on the nose says "Duke University"- had an easy life for awhile

Finally started taking the brakes apart on my bus, getting ready to buy all new parts for them, including doing a dual circuit master cylinder conversion, new brake cylinders, shoes, and drums. Looks like I'm going to have to do some seal work on one of the reduction boxes.
I even got some new tires I can't wait to put on. 195/70-15's

What a shame it appears the brakes had zero miles on them.
On another note are we still allowed to say "master" and "slave" cylinder? |

My March 1964 Kombi that I have owned for the last 28 years. Not so much what I did to my bus today, but more like what I have been doing to it over the last two and a half months! The result of scraping and sanding by hand. Most of the paint loss was when the body was "prepared" for paint in the '80s. With care and patience I was able to save much of the remaining L87 Pearl White paint.

I received my new 64 Panel/Camper on Monday afternoon when the seller was nice enough to drive over 500 miles to my house. His first time in SE Arizona
This morning right after I got off the phone with Arizona MVD getting my temp registration and plate ... I stepped outside in the morning heat and finished cleaning the windows that I started on yesterday. After that I vacuumed everything from front to back, then hand washed everything from front to back. Threw on some Armorall on the cab and cargo floormats. All of that cleaning was perfect for me getting to know about my new bus. Headed out to fill the tank with gas and a short spin due to the high temps by that time of day. She is solid as a rock, drives like new and has new tires to get me anywhere my FJ takes me (well maybe not but at least some forest roads) ...
It was a perfect day.
