After a bit of a hiatus away from wrenching and my VW, I finally finished my 1967 SO42 Front Brakes. Took my bus for a test drive and seems like I may have done what I set out to do. lol.

Now, more to come. Last two Fridays I found time to play in my shop most of the days and get some projects done, so I am happy about that.

Was nice to drive my bus around. Going to order some new fuel house and drain my tank of old gas, install the new fuel line, ordering a vacuum distributor so I can relegate the 009 to the spare parts box, as well as starting to explore rear brakes next.

Kaizen! Little steps for me!

I had a problem with my 1904 sputtering and thought it was fuel starvation or timing. I checked the fuel filter and it was clean, so did the timing 7.5 degrees at idle and 28 degrees at 3000 rpm and no more sputtering!

Do you know what it was timed at when it was sputtering?

They're actually fireproof kapok-filled drapes designed to protect walls, particularly in lifts, from impact damage and abrasion during renovation work.

I bought them last autumn, because they were advertised as welding curtains. Easy mistake for the seller to make as they have the same fire rating.

I was going to keep a couple and sell the rest.

I Googled the manufactuer to see how much they sell for new and found out what they're really for. I figured there wouldn't be much of a market for them, so I decided to hang them up.

The garage is narrow. I was tired of scraping along the rough brick to get past the truck and banging the door on the wall getting in and out of the cab. When I work on the brakes etc., I have my back against the wall. These are soft and warm. Should help keep the garage warm too.

BarryL -

I don’t remember where the timing was when it was sputtering, but it was significantly off as I had to change it quite a bit.

On a separate note, I have a vented gas cap, and a bay 15 gallon tank in my split. Today was one of the first “hot days” in NC getting up to 86 degrees. With about 1/3 of a tank, I drove the bus, parked in the sun, and drove home around 6pm. Within 15 min of parking the bus I started to hear a hissing from the vented fuel cap. I opened it and a lot of air went into the tank, as there was a significant vacuum in there. I assume from he fuel and vapor in the tank cooling off. So then after it was equalized, I waited another 15 min and I could hear the hissing again! So I opened it and it was about half the amount of suction this time.

So I assume the venting hiss is enough to slowly equalize this pressure without imploding the tank. Does anyone else have experience with the “rate” of tank venting on warm days to avoid implosion?

A "vented cap" ought to keep up with your fuel expansion or contraction. I suspect it really isn't venting much if at all. If you have some, swap caps and see if it re-occurs? Or start to rotate/tighten the cap but leave it a little loose and hope that vents it better?

Does your bay tank have the vent line on top still?

The bay tank has the vent line at the top which I connected into the top of the filler tube. But it is still a “closed system” since that is still inside the filler cap. The vented cap I use now was a fix from the stock cap which was allowing fuel to leak out during hard left turns. The newer cap prevents fuel from getting out during hard left turns, but seems to also be “slower” at venting air from going in to the tank to equalize a vacuum as fuel and fuel vapor cools. It does well letting pressure out while preventing fuel from ever getting out.

Honestly, I was just very surprised how much negative pressure or vacuum there was in my fuel tank at 1/3 full as it cooled off in the garage on a warm day.

This shows my fuel tank upgrade and the location of the vent line connecting to the filler tube, and which fuel cap I have settled on at this point.

I run a bay tank in the '67 daddybus. I used the bay neck (I used screws and 3 flat washers to "pinch" the round filler lip against the bus body ( no holes drilled in bus). In the bay neck, I welded in a fuel flap from the neck of a fuel injected truck gas tank (Toyota I think). I use a non-vented cap. I ran the breather hose to a charcoal-filled reusable fuel filter. After the filter, the end of the breather hose is clamped to the gas filler tray (with the drain pipe). Breathes like stock and no sloshing out on turns.

Interesting - did you elevate the carbon fuel filter? Have you got a photo of it or a link to the product you used?

I added 3 holes to support the 10 gallon filler neck, and then connected it to the 15 gallon bay tank. I have a vent hose from the top of the tank to the top end (side) of the filler tube.

I use a different cap now which is vented - it is Stant 10623 type vented fuel cap.

I just ordered a sand blaster and some media - never sand blasted, but I want to clean off my 5 bus wheels (14 inch from 1966) and get them painted as well as replacing my hubcap clips. I ordered 5 sets of hubcap clips and the “tool” from Wolfsburg West.

Any advice on getting the wheels as good as possible with silver white? I was thinking of media blasting them, priming with bare metal etch primer, and then Silver White base coat, and a clear coat.

My first attempt at this was not very good - I didn’t blast them, they had gunk in the paint job, and brake fluid basically ate through some of the paint anyway, so looking to do a better job this time around...

I did this-

For no other reason than I could! The ultimate Anti-theft device. The "nut" is from a VW Military vehicle. Not sure of the vintage or model. Had to rethread it to the Bus column. I took the actual button out of the original assembly. I used a button made for a Bug 3-spoke Standard wheel in the nut hole. Made by MSW in Thailand. Nice piece. Kinda spendy. But, whatever. So, I fixed it, too-
