drove it 30 miles yesterday. basically the first time since 4/8/2018 (after NBDS). Somehow I got another 50 miles between no dough and 1/19 when I put it on the lift to do the brakes.....but I dont remember what those miles were. Then people started dying, so it sat on the lift.
down on power - PRI-G helps a ton at keeping/restoring old fuel, but isn't perfect. added 10 fresh gallons to the ~5 that were in there, but it didn't help much. Have to burn some more fuel through it, hopefully it will pick back up.
threw away the EIS/CIP1 66-67 turn signal switch. the electrical contact arm inside just wanders around. the screw holes that hold the switch into the housing were drilled to large, so the screws just go right through, and those screws themselves are long enough to bind the mechanism... and of course it suffered the exact same aways-cancels-right-signal problem the stock switch has since '98 if the cancel ring is installed.
installed LED dash lights - turns out my intermittent oil light was a triple combo: bad sender (the space would move in and out...), split terminal at the bulb, and the bulb itself was loose in it's socket..... the auto-pal/stardrive LEDs are pretty nice so far. and the LED dome festoons too. need to get another pair for the rear dome that I forgot about.
fixed the front dome - it stopped working a few years ago. ended up cleaning the switch contacts, and slightly rejiggling them so they touched better. it's still a bit finicky, but it works now.
oh - and the butty's bits throttle linkage? With the boot upside down (small end down) it doesnt bind up on the boot. The as-shipped length of the arm between the pedal and the linkage is also significantly too short - pedal was so low I couldn't heal-toe when needed to catch it dying at idle. it is adjustable - so plan to adjust it (and free it up before you install it!!).
I've got some sort of misfire I need to figure out too - I can hear the odd pop at idle, and more so during decel. guess I should pull the plugs and look. _________________ ...david - '66 SO-44 #231 |

oh and:
I had to trim the new WW floor mat a bit: at the base of the throttle pedal, it was binding on the pedal coming up off the floor. I took maybe 1/4" off to the rear (FIF) of the pedal and now it's moving freely. _________________ ...david - '66 SO-44 #231 |

I have a question - I am trying to quiet down my 1966 Split Bus. So far I have changed my tires to Hankook Vantra 195/75r14 which are great and very quiet. Next I put dynamat and foam sound insulation over the entire luggage compartment and inside the engine compartment on the 2 top panels (behind the fuel tank was too hard to reach without taking everything out.
Lastly, I am considering changing from a Vintage Speed Superflow to the Gene Berg 4 to 1 Merged 1.5 inch header GB932HBH and the quiet muffler that goes with it.
Does anyone have any feedback on whether the merged header performs better, whether the quiet muffler on a merged header is quieter? Lastly, I want the tailpipe to come out where the cutout is on the rear apron, but all the single mufflers bend back in on the right side of the bus.
Part of me wants to take the GB971HB and re-weld it so the tailpipe actually comes out where the apron cutout is.
Thoughts on the Berg header and muffler option? _________________ Here is my 1961 Beetle Restoration:

I can't speak to the specific berg muffler - but I've never seen a "quiet" muffler ("quiet pack") that was anywhere near quiet. I think they're "quiet" compared to zoomies and stingers....
My vintagespeed "stock style" is about the quietest I've seen for an upright other than genuine german stock mufflers with a single damper. It's a low rumble, and far from the loudest part of the drivetrain at road speeds.
If you're looking at megaflows and merged 1.5" headers - you're usually not going to find "quiet" goes well with "high performing" in the VW world - there just isn't enough length to get both. And really, most upright vw exhausts aren't quiet anyway. _________________ ...david - '66 SO-44 #231 |

Ok, so you are talking about this one?
https://store.vintagespeed.com.tw/Stainless-Steel-...p201392897
If I use that on a 1904 with stock valve size (dual port) and 218 cam, could it be quieter than the VS Superflow without totally killing my power?
I know it is all hypothetical - but any educated guess helps… |
Similar boat here. I'm removing my 1 3/8" EMPI 4/1 and installing the VS Sport Muffler: https://store.vintagespeed.com.tw/CLASSIC-SUPER-FL...-p87513431
Here's what I've learned, the 4/1 header does produce more HP (2-3) than a similar sized performance muffler, however, these HP come into play at high RPM that some cars never reach except for a dyno pull. The VS unit gives more low end torque and mid range power,
Are you running the Sport Muffler or the Super Flow? The Sport is good for 125 HP before it becomes restrictive. At that mpoint they recomend the Super Flow, 125 HP+.
I just got a new toy, the DUb Dyno App. Tons of fun.
I plugged in your engine specs and ran it with 4 exhaust systems to see the effects HP and Torque. Here's what I found:
Stock Exhaust: 66.5 HP / 107.2 FT/LBS
1 3/8" w/ Muffler: 87.5 HP / 117.i FT/LBS
1 1/2" w/Muffler: 84.6 HP / 113.4
1 5/8" w/ Muffler: 80.1 / 110.2
You can see I'm in the process right now
As I said, the 4/1 does give more HP on the Dyno or in a race RPM environment,
otherwise the VS works for real day to day driving and it's quieter, by some.
And while I'm at it, I'm making recordings of the change in sound from 4/1 to Muffler and record the 912 engine. I'm using the Voice Memos app on my iPad.
From the right corner, 5' out, 5' over' 5' up (step ladder), record from the same location each time Cold starts. The playback is quite clear and the 5x5x5 gets you far enough away so you hear exhaust notes rather than valve train noise. Head phones.
that's enough babbling for one morning.
