Thanks - $4,000 if you already have a/c - I don't. I will just continue my decades long wait for a more modern Westy and use the Forester in the desert, I guess. _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

Here's my DIY front AC thread. You might find my experiences of interest or use.

Randy, I think the cost goes up because of the shop labor not the components. I installed a Vintage Air system in our Vanagon that never came with AC. It was an 82 diesel. I used Blake Heinlein's Vanagon AC install as a reference, but made my own tweaks along the way. It cost about $1500 in parts and I did all the labor myself. It does not require a lot of tools or talent. You just need to be methodical. If you read Blakes blog he says to allow for some time to complete. I did ours in stages over the winter and it took all winter and part of spring to complete in my spare time. I did the interior part first so that I could use that van a couple times in Feb and March. I would think if I were to do one for someone, it would probably take a solid week or 40 hours, so at $80 per hour, you are looking at $3200 plus parts. Here is a link to Blake's install. https://sites.google.com/site/blakeheinlein/blake/air-conditioning-project If you can't do it yourself, then the labor really adds to the cost. markw
