Hi,
Im building a Volksrod and will be removing the roof. I know the tunnel isnt strong enough, so;
What can I do to reinforce the pan?
Use angle iron rear torsion to front?

Thanks in advance Cool

Put convertible reinforcing rails on.

I suggest that you also ask on http://www.volksrods.com/

Karmann welded in numerous other reinforcements to the Beetle convertible body to maximize stiffness. The chassis rails listed above are the most significant and readily available. Other areas included a sheetmetal brace going across the front of the rear seat base; you could conceivable use your "angle iron" adaptation to stiffen the body a bit more there. But that angle iron was not welded to the CHASSIS, just within the body.

vert rails hang way down though...

with some work you can flip them and run them on opposite sides.

its not a simple flip and swap you gotta do some finish work and i threw in some more support here and there. maybe overkill but im no scientist i like it clean and safe. big job but verts just dont get low enough for me.

thanks,

they will replace the heater channels, didnt really clarify, if you want to keep heat you can seal them up or run a small tube through them.

In place of angle iron, why not use 1" square tube? It looks better and gives stiffness in 4 planes in place of angle iron's 2.

Or if you think you are really going to be hammering on it, you could use a 1 x 2 rectangular tube. It could be fitted up into the groove on the floor pan where the mounting bolts go.

You guys are getting me motivated, I may try the 1 x 2 on another semi VW project, Kelmark on a type one chassis, I made a targa type cut in the roof.
My sons volksrod project will be going topless, if he ever gets off his behind and leaves that damn playstation! Evil or Very Mad
