Anyone know why my tire did this?
We were 30 miles from the nearest town on dirt roads in the Mendocino National Forest when I noticed it. So I camped there for the night and put on the spare. The spare was very low on air pressure but we made it out OK. _________________ 4 speed 88 Westy |

Looks like you busted a belt. Probably hit a rock a little too hard. |

Besides the rather large hole, I think there is a basic alignment issue going on there. I would seriously check the other tires on the van for similar wear. If you don't want a repeat, get it on an alignment rack soon. At a bare minimum check out your toe in manually with some measuring sticks. Do a search for a complete run down on a do it yourself how to. _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!

Wrong toe in or out will cause scrubbing across the center of the tire. That tire looks like a victim of chronic over-camber, as in it is leaning too far out at the top of the tire. A mark of very poor alignment to start with, or bad control arm bushings or worn ball joints if it was on the front. The rear suspension also has a camber adjustment. |

That picture shows a very badly warped tire with a chunk out and many miles. Everyone is correct. Time for some new rubber and to make it last longer get the alignment "trued" Those look like the worn out tires on my Cabby but without the missing chunk. I replace tires regularly at my job and I would not have recommended a trip even without chunk missing. New rubber feels good. |

It never hurts to check alignment, but if you look at the tire you will see that the right side of the tire is a larger diameter than the left side. This is very indicative of a broken belt which has allowed that side of the tire to expand. Watch your other tires carefully. In my experience if one tire fails from a broken belt one or more of the others may not be far behind. |

My van originally had incorrectly rated tires and they looked like that after a trip down to Cali on the Pacific Coast Highway.
Got the right tires (Michelin Agilis for my 15" rims) and did the same trip the next year - no problems. After two years the tires still look almost new! _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS
