Seems like more often than not these days when I come out of the market or Pep Boys or anyplace, I find a note on the windshield of my 64 Deluxe 21 Window asking if I want to sell. In fact, it happens so often that I now have a file folder just for these notes. Or if I pull into a gas station it seems like the person on the opposite side of the pump I'm using either wants to make an offer or had a bus once or knew someone who did. Or if I'm just cruising down the road I'll see an arm hanging out of a window up in front of me holding a cell phone camera taking a picture of my ride. Or I'm waiting at a red light and out of the corner of my eye I see the guy in the next lane gesturing at me (in a good way!) And for the next 30-60 seconds I'll have to tell the tale of how I came to own this splitty, how much I paid for it, whether I did the restoration myself, etc etc. And always, always the inevitable .... "is that one of them there 28 window or 31 window or (fill in your own number) buses?"
And much to my amazement I'll have people I've never met tell me, "Oh, you're the guy who lives over on Walnut Street.... I recognize your bus". This alone has made me more scrupulous about being a polite considerate driver in my neighborhood.
Can anyone else relate? |

I never had any notes left but I do run into people that want to chat about my Bus in all those same situations you mention. This is still new to me since buying my Bus about a month ago. I am sure it will start to wear off and get annoying. _________________ It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere. |

We set up at a local flea market with the High Roof and it is now at the point that when they start walking to it with that look I say "it's a 62" pause "no it's not for sale".
The best was a guy that wanted it do to deliveries in NYC..... |

it used to annoy me sometimes when people would ask the same stupid questions about my bus, like "what year is it?" and such. but, now i really try to be polite and patitent with whoever it is b/c i get some good leads from time to time on other buses. i am usually asking everybody if they know of any buses or junkyards around. _________________ WANTED:

Drive a widehatch standard and It will happen less than any 21/23 window bus. It a sign of the times I guess. My ragtop bug has the shiney paint and chrome 5 spokes, yet my bus gets more attention. You know everytime I have the bus out my nieghbors will come up and talk to me and all the kids riding bikes and skateboards even comment on the bus. _________________ '62 Rag Top Bug

I got profiled by a local probation officer last week and he followed me 25 miles to my destination town. When I hit the donut shop he had two units surround me. I thought he was another avid bus follower that I get all the time in the 21, but this time I was wrong. I was white with a goat and spikey hair and driving my bus thats in the avatar. He didn't want to take a picture or want to waive he wanted me to go down town for a felony probation warrant. I told him I wasn't having it (yeah right) and the guy they were looking for had a allot less hair. One of the officers that was there was one of my bosses sons so he got a good kick out of harassing me. So I have been driving my Doca for the last couple of days staying low.
Not all of your followers want to spread love some want to steal, some want to arrest, and others just hate hippies. Oh and they are still looking for a gentleman that matches my profile driving a Kombi White over Green in the Santa Barbara County area. Turn yourself in so I can go to the donut shop again. |

I was at the CTS the other week, my daughter and I were admiring a 21 window when a wannabe hippie started telling the owner how he had a bus "just like this" except that his had those cool corner windows and was a '68. _________________ Scott

my 66 13 window, though complete, is pretty frooking ugly but I still get notes on it from time to time. i just laugh.
i'm not sure what's more annoying. hippies who really want a camper like mine and I tell them they can't afford it or idiots who always try to guess the year and are way off. "Is that a 72?" when that happens, i just say "no" and move on. _________________ 59 DD panel. Former Romano's TV delivery bus
