It didn't. The papers say 1,7l but in reality it has 2l engine.

I eventually dug into this and the engine code (CJ) reveals that I got 2.0l engine from a bus, 71hp.

Not too bad but I was hoping for a 4-series engine.

Anyway, new (i.e. current) pics at

Horrible looking car!....you should send that to me so I can hide it for you!

Laughing

Actually....very, very, very nice car! And...especially on a 411 with its curves (compared to the 412)...the 8 spoke wheels actually look quite nice!

What color is that? Its hard to tell from my computer. It is either a very well polished Alaska blue metallic....or L96M Marathon blue that has been cooled a little by the camera!

Nice! Ray

The car was found in a barn about 3 years ago. 57000 miles on it. Interior is all original but had a fresh coat of paint. It was painted I think the original color blue. Whatever that is called . I bought it just the way you see it. It's really clean and straight body. Has new brakes ,tires ,wheels that sort of thing. Turns a lot of heads when I drive it. I figure mostly because most people are wondering what it is. Lol

It looks too good, damn.

Although I've noticed that new paint properly done magically transforms daily beater to a pristine pearl.

Even if many details are still old and worn .. effect on overall appearance is huge.

I hope I some day get my 412 to look as good as that.

Just bought this lovely 72 411. It runs strong and fires right up. It's got some real issues though, mostly cosmetic. Any help or direction to find replacements or "same as" items is greatly appreciated. I'm not going for a restoration, just a good looking Odd Rod.

I got rid of the moons for stock hubcaps the day of purchase.
Hate the Jetta fin, it will be removed.
Wants: Dash cover, door panels, carpet, SEATS!, chrome headlight bezels, working heater, working gas gauge. Paint job, definitely a paint job.

My type 3 was killed in a Utah storm, so I'm in Sacramento now and starting over. Wish me luck!

Nice car!
That roof rack "may" be an original dealer item.

In general there are no parts or kits for any of the items you listed. Sewfine can make patterns and kits for your seats.....but its pricey for the pattern making. If a few get together a group split makes the cost about the same as any sewfine kit after that.
The rear seat is so close to type 3 that a type 3 cover could be lightly modded and fit.

Also Pro car pro 90,seats are close enough that they can be installed on the existing seat bottom and frame with a little work.

No dash cover. I am working on a restoration method right now but it will be summer at,earliest. No door panels but they are not that hard to fabricate. There were never any chrome headlight bezels.....or are you speaking of the thin chrome retainer rings for the sealed beam bulbs?

We can help you work through the heater. Take a look at classic campers running thread right now. Lots of basics to check. Same things for the fuel gauge.

Buy the haynes manual to start with. The carpet....same thing. You need to buy yard goods....cut patterns and have edges bound locally. No carpet kits.

Also....do some reading here and on the 411/412 forum on the STF. There are a lot of suspension related issues to check out.

Welcome! Ray

STF?
I'm pretty handy with a sewing machine may just have to make my own seat covers. The springs are pretty shot I like the challenge.

I think I have all the chrome trim except for the 4 vents at the back.

I've been reading these forums for the last week, before actually buying the car, I've learned a lot, but a lot was over my head, not a mechanic here. First thing is getting her clean, she was the daily driver of a mechanic, so I'm feeling pretty confident.

Nice to hear from you guys so quickly,

D

This is where I saw chrome bezels, they look great, must be custom.

Probably so on the bezels. On the 411 they were all a zinc pot metal.....those may just be polished....but could probably be chromed. About half of the 412 bezels were metal and the late ones were plastic.

STF= SHOPTALK FORUMS.

You will end up being a pretty fair mechanic unless you have deep pockets. It sounds good.....but bear in mnd that there are few if any mechanics with real type 4 engine.. not to mention type 4 car experience......so just warning you that everything needs to be checked.

But from appearances. .....its straight...drives...and appears to be fairly complete. Thats a good start.

List whats been done if you know....and whats under the hood. Ray

i don't have a list really. I was told that the engine is original, gas heater was cannibalized by the PO to fix the one in his 412. Electrical seems stable, auto trans shifts well. Shocks, struts and brakes have all been done within the year. Cold start injector has been disconnected, it's not that cold here and it didn't always shut off properly. Oil and tranny fluid changed and valves adjusted as part of sale.

It also came with 3 boxes of parts, lenses, brakes, and who knows what else, I'll dig into that this weekend.

Thanks!

Just a small note. Chrome head light bezels were an option form model year 1970. As the sales started officilaly in the states from model year 1971, they are propably almost impossible to find in the U.S. Chrome head light bezels are rare even here in Europe.

Here's a couple pics of my 1974 412, bought last year (on Samba!) from California. That's my yellow '69 Beetle as well, also bought on Samba.

On the 412: everything works, even the key buzzer, and she drives well. The interior is in great shape, apart from dash cracks, and the body is pretty good too. It does have the dreaded rust hole on the decklid, and some rust around the windshield and back window, but nothing too bad. 74,000 original miles. I drive her at least once a week.

Since these pictures were taken I've replaced the tires, gone through the brakes (including new calipers up front, wheel cylinders in back, soft lines, friction surfaces, etc.), changed the fluids, and swapped out the fuel lines. Next up are the CV boots, then shocks front and rear.

Eventually, once I decide what to do about the window rubber front and rear (tips on this would be most helpful!), I'm going to pull the front and rear glass, fix the rust, and have the car resprayed its original Alaska Blue.
