|
|
Just bought this Puck and I am in the middle of a 2000 mile return trip from Southern Cal with it.
.
It tows really well behind a Vanagon, and costs me only about 5mph on hills and about 1mpg overall. You can tell it was designed to be towed by a small car. I found that I had to take some of the stuff I had in my van and put it ahead of the axle in the front of the trailer to really smooth out the ride. It actuallly has torsion bar suspension, with arms that are about 6-8" long. |

Kevin, here's one of the "galley".
Bucko, I bought a different one than the one that was posted here, and I would have looked at that one first but my Vanagon broke down around the time he had it listed. If it is still listed, and you were interested, I think it was worthwhile...he had it stored inside, and it sounded pretty solid.
Here's another shot of the inside

Old thread but I just went camping with my puck and the westy, nice to have separate bedrooms!
I thought it towed like shit behind the westy, but I did have it loaded down a bit too much, all the camping gear and my folding minibike did not help.
it tows well behind the singlecab oddly enough though, at least flatland. I could be Judy's (rebapuck from the pick posted by Mtodd) twin, well I'd be the one that had "complications" at birth :

Same puck from the beginning of this thread. Used a Kawasaki Mule to tow it out onto a sandbar on a river up here in the PNW for a weekend. My son, who is 5, thought this was the coolest thing we had ever done. |

What the...
(Sorry, someone had to do it)
The Pucks are awesome. I have a 14 foot Larson wooden boat that I've been tempted to try with the Vanagon, but I think it weighs a fair bit more... |

pucks are supposed to be 660lbs dry. I would not sweat a 14 wood boat too much unless its made with pressure treated 4x4's Guy we camp with pulls a 14 wood runabout, correct year motor and correct year trailer behind his '72 westy no problems, other guy pulls a '78 riviera bow rider with correct year evinrude 75 on steel trailer behind his '78 no problems either. I wussed out and opted for a 12ft Carolina skiff center console w/25hp to keep things light, but I'm gonna sell it and go the vintage boat route soon too, I want an 14-16ft aluminum runabout with about a 40 horse on it. _________________ Markus |

I agree with your son, that was a pretty cool idea!!! Mine seems to sit alot lower than yours, must be the 8" wheels that are on the early ones or something, I would have been afraid to get mine hung up somewhere. My combi-camp has some pretty wicked ground clearence, I plan to put some larger A/T tires on the single cab and use it for some off-road camping soon, plus its actually twice the size of the puck:

Take a look at my post on Eriba tires, I think under the "OTHER VW VEHICLES" forum...I found some utility trailer tires that were great, but too fat and tall to fit well in the wheelwell, so I took some metal plates and basically added 1" between the axle (attached by 4 bolts) and the frame. Only positive changes to the ride. The trailer actually has pretty good approach and departure angles due to it's short length.

Looks like the current models weigh about 700kg. thats about 1500 lb. I'd get one in a heartbeat at 660 lbs!! Can anyone confirm this number on the older models? _________________ '89 Syncro Westy

I had an original sales brochure from 1966/67 for the puck that had that as a number (along with about 75lb tounge weight). You have to ask the guy/gal that stole it out of my trailer at a show 2 weeks ago to post up some pics of it though
I can't see them getting too much heavier than that into the mid '70's which are the most common stateside anyway. _________________ Markus |

I've thought that one of these could be cool as a base camp kind of option.
http://www.aliner.com/design/products_detail_aliner.php?prodid=6
Weight is 500# with a GVRW of 1000#. Could be a nice place to store all the kitchen stuff and keep things dry while you went out an played.

thing I don't like about the aliner is you cant get into them with them folded up, and with that huge skylight your pretty much screwed for using the top for packing stuff up on. Hardside factor is nice though, don't have to deal with any wet canvas!
I had one called a travlite that I sold when I found my first combi-camp. it was pretty cool and made for a good wet weather camper as the canvas was coated plastic, but it was very tiny. cool thing is you could open the door with it closed up and bottom was nothing but open storage, not to mention with only weighed about 300 lbs and about a5 minute job to set up (add-a-room took a few more minutes though):
