OMG, no wonder TK became so cynical. 9 pages for this mod seems excessive. So simple.

Most of those threads dragged out as a result of his contentiousness, tbh…

THAT has no veracity. Set aside you prejudice long enough to have a peek into TheSamba archives.

BTW, I stopped at Pep Boys last night and happened to see the High temp insulation in their street rod exhaust selection.

Another area which could benefit from insulation is between the front on the floor. The heater and Radiator hoses are routed under there and they contribute to the interior temps on a long drive.

Is it possible to do this mod in a way that makes it possible to shut off the flow without removing the trim panel? If so, pics?

This pic is just the glovebox removed. I haven't tested it yet. Didn't have to cut any hoses.

Harbor freight long nose 6" vise grip $6.99 can be used for other tasks in the wintertime.

There are other types too 22850 Hose Pincher by Lisle. http://a.co/8ITln0l
But the vise grip is a more useful tool (otherwise) and easier for this task.

I had a similar problem in a 1990 syncro Westy I just bought. This is a very old post, but I sometimes read these old ones to learn how to fix a common issue. Before you go pulling everything apart, or crawling under the van, take off the cover of the heat control levers on the dash. This is a simple process that is well described in a gowesty Youtube video for replacing the bulbs with LEDS. Then check that the cable attached to the heat control (2nd lever from the top) comes to a stop when moved to the left. If the lever (without the rubber extension) moves past the opening in the dash, your problem is that the cable is adjusted incorrectly and that is why you cannot close the valve that controls hot water flow to the heat exchanger. Loosen the 7 mm bolt that captures the cable (you need small hands to do this Very Happy and might have to also remove the blower control for the rear compartment fan), use needle nose pliers to pull the outer rubber covering of the cable to the right an inch or so, and re-tighten the cable retaining bolt. That's it. Now when you push the lever to the left, the valve operates correctly and closes completely. If this does not fix the problem, the solutions described below should help you eventually get this fixed. Good luck.

Dan

Thanks for the idea and inspiration. Here is my take of the heat shield, builtusing Reflectix. Note that I already had the stock insulation on the driver's foot area. It was in good shape, all I did was reglue it in place.

I applied reflective tape on all seams for durability:
