good or bad, like it or not, you have to agree, it will be much more inviting inside.. |
Well, that is a matter of taste. It could have been tidied up in a better style.
Like it or not, no one has to agree.
It's like saying what you think the best beer is, and expecting universal agreement. |
I'm sure he means that it is more inviting inside than how he found it. I'd rather sit on tweed than rat shit! |

I understand wanting a tidier interior, but that was not the only choice of a tidy interior, so I'm comparing apples to apples, not apples to oranges.
Saying it's new therefore better is just a lame excuse.
Repainting instead of keeping the ratty old paint makes sense with that train of thought. Or buying a brand new mini-van, that would rock!
It's bullshit to say we have to agree with his taste, and nutswinging bullshit for you to defend that. |
My, aren't we a little testy. I wasn't nutswinging, just saying that I don't think he was asking us to agree with his taste in interior, just that it is better than the rat's nest he started with.
I fully understand your desire for a stock appearing interior. That is what I am looking into with my Single Cab, although I do like the look of tweed/vinyl combo as well. I can say that anything is better than what I have now, that is for damn sure.
I really respect John and the crew at KCW's work, especially on what he has done to save this BD from what I am sure would have been an untimely demise in someone else's hands. Most people would have turned it into a parts bus, destroying it forever. If that is nutswinging, then I'll continue to Tarzan all over that shit. |
Dont be so shure that there would not have been a long line of people prepared to buy that bus and fix it up everybit as well as john has.
John does good work but for god sake take him down of the pedastal |
Loads of other people would have saved it. I think BD 23s are generally considered pretty desirable.
If that was a 64 kombi, would anyone have bothered?... back to apples and oranges.
Looks like John is wasting no time, which is cool. Doesn't mean everyone has to love all his choices.
porkchop, Yes, he was saying we must agree with his taste. I'm just calling it as I see it Sorry if you don't like people to disagree with you, don't be testy. hmm.... a testy nutswinger, is that redundant?
here's some more tweed porn for you

I almost asked if you were a little teste after the nutswinger comment but I figured I'd keep the puns at a minimum. I guess we took his comment two different ways! I'm really not bothered when people disagree with me as everyone is entitled to their opinion. In fact, I think we can agree to disagree on this one.
That bus is the style I am thinking about using in my single but with beige tweed/beige vinyl combo. I think that bus's interior looks ultra clean! |

F**K 'em John. Unless your rolling around with a stock height bus with rusted rockers and missing hubcaps, you won't get much support here. I think all the haters here are jealous because they didn't get their hands on the bus first so they could part it out and make a few bucks. Nice work John and crew. Not nutswiging, just giving props on some good work. I guess you could have made the interior stock and look like every other BD 23 in the world. That would have been so memorable. See ya in a couple months.....................D |

Thanks guys.. This is the kinda stuff that makes me not post so often on Samba.. It's too funny that you are not allowed to compliment anyone one here.. if you do, your nut swinging.. Last I checked, everyone likes compliments from time to time. Thats not nut swinging, thats being nice..
Treat people the way you want to be treated!..
Also funny how people twist words on here..
I think sometimes the big picture gets missed.. I thought we were all after the same goal.. "Restoration and preservation of aircooled VW's". Which to me, is repairing and getting them back on the road.. Not dissing because a color is a shade off or someone doesn't like an interior, wheels, stance or year..
Big picture.. Saving as many as we can.. If all you want to do is critisize and scrutinize.. well.. I'll let you finish that sentance. _________________ "Building the shit out of vw's" Lifer. |

I think what you are doing with that bus John is way cool, I like the interior, I would not do it to one of my buses (if I had a bus), but I like it....I also think that everyone is entitled to their opinion, be it positive or negative, we all have to respect that, this, after all is a public forum....now if someone really wants to get stupid with personal attacks and all, then that is something all together different(the gloves come off).. ....I am just glad that you were able to, or took the time to save that bus, like someone else said here, most would have just chopped it up, and sold off the parts...John, do with YOUR bus whatever the f&#k you want, fuck, launch it off another cliff, if you so desire.....it's your bus _________________ that's not patina, that's fucking rust man!!!!

there are enough beautifully restored SWR/CB 23 deluxe barndoors. go to any big show, especially bad camberg and youll be able to see quite a few. and guess what? they all look the same. people are right when they say once youve seen one 'correct' restoration...youve seen them all.
ultimately its johns bus and he will enjoy it. i doubt hes thinking about if all of US will enjoy it.
keep it up! _________________ drive your split. |

So I've read on this thread:
1) first showing for the bus is to Tom Toms
2) second stop is the Vegas show
My questions is......will the
3) third stop be at Bulli Brigade 14? All us east coasters would like to check it out in person.
How about it? Bulli Brigade 14?

If you mean me, you're mistaken. I'm not really big on sunroof deluxes, and it's too far away. I have a bd in much better condition, without the silly holes in the roof.
Also, I have a history of saving buses, even ones I could have made more money on by parting out. And put a ton of work into doing that, where others would have parted them out and left them to be crushed.
It is a good question about what is restorable, and what isn't.
How about this one? It's pretty damn solid, but it fell off a cliff (or was it pushed?)
My feeling is that the truck is less likely to be restored than a bd 23 in similar condition. Maybe that is people dissing the 59 sc, but whatever.

I was tactful and polite in my comments on the interior. It was not a personal attack. There was even a compliment in the same post.
What's the matter with that?
Rather than not being allowed to compliment, it seemed like some people felt people shouldn't say anything but compliments. Cheerleading only allowed ? That is pretty twisted.
Come on, no one should be hurt by someone not rah rah about a choice of interior.
To end this post on a positive note, rather than a implied insult, it's nice that the bus is being put back on the road. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

You may be right... Don't know the guy or the situation. But he posted this in June on the KCW site:
" They can build their BD 23 however they want.. but this one.. is MINE. Remember, it's all bolt on.. It can all be changed in the off chance I have to sell it.. becasue that is the only reason I will ever sell it.. if I have to. This is one of those VW's you dream of owning.. and I got one!! And I will ROLL this baby.. not just around town, but to the shows, just like the partsgetter.. "
Personally, I think it'd be cool if it stays with KCW for many, many years.

I would save the sc if it was RHD
I think all buses should be saved . If you can't fix it sell it to someone
who can (easier said than done)
As for that interior I love og stuff but I also think what John is doing
with that tweed is super cool especially in hot climates _________________ Luca Brasi's got nothing on me
