Stock linkage...I know. Not good. Is there a way to test for the linkage so I can know its that before investing? When I disconnect the carbs there are no return springs to hold them closed. Should I use something like a rubber band on each?? |

Ohhh...there ought to be some sort of return spring on the throttle plates, Jeff. If there isn't, rig something. Rubber bands won't do it. I've got a rather healthy return spring off my left carb (Webers) due to weak internal return springs. The linkage itself, so long as it isn't binding anywhere, should be fine and servicable.
The popping then stalling is a sign of a very lean condition. Double and triple check the obvious first before you go ripping into the carb to see what size jets it has (though, that may be the problem). A little tickle in the back of my brain keeps telling me it may be distributor related. Are you getting spark on that side? And platinums aren't really good for the car - stock plugs are the best. Something about the heat range, which would definately foul up the best laid plans. Before you get into the carbs, change the plugs for stockers, and if you've got a spare distributor, change it out and see what happens. I had to do that on my SR (similar symptoms) and found that my NEW 090 distributor wasn't worth squat. The advance mechanism wasn't working. It would idle, but at the slightest hint of accelleration would backfire and stall.

The return spring....and its a big one....is on the linkage.
I bought new plugs yesterday and had hoped to install today but I am watching the Pats kick some butt on Monday Night Football with my boy. Priorities ya know!
Plugs first, adjust carbs next. |

Somethin' ain't right then. I've never had Kads, but I think all carbs have built-in return springs. "Helper" springs are only necessary when the other ones are getting weak. You should be able to take off the linkage, pull the throttle plate all the way open and let go, and the butterflys should snap shut. Without knowing the model of the Kadron, I can't find a parts diagram to see if there is supposed to be one.

Try switching the plug wires on cyls. 3 and 4. A VW engine will run suprisingly well with those 2 wires crossed and they will pop on occasion. Give it a try? _________________ Jerry...

Just make sure whatever you rig up is either in the center of the linkage, or exactly matched on both sides. Otherwise, the carbs will never sync up properly throughout the range of motion. The linkage needs to engage each carb evenly from idle to full throttle to work smoothly. I learned that the hard way when my motor builder put a large spring on just one carb (on top of a weak one in the center). He spent hours trying to get that thing to run right and never did, and the guy who redid it properly clued me in finally. Now it works great. _________________ 1970 Autodynamics Deserter Series One (gone)

Yeah, that's true. I'm still fooling around with fine tuning the motor, but on it's maiden voyage to the next town for a show earlier in the year, it seemed to pull nice and strong, with no stumbling, but I just don't like the idea of a helper spring pulling on the linkage right at the carb. A center mount would certainly take some of the pressure off, but it's a matter of finding the right mounting points! |

The thing that made the biggest difference was that he put some bicycle brake housing through the guide tube for the throttle cable to go through. That reduced a lot of the drag on the cable from going through the tube at an angle, and made it so the spring didn't need to be nearly as stiff. It's also much smoother at the pedal when I accelerate now. It was really amazing how much difference it made. _________________ 1970 Autodynamics Deserter Series One (gone)
