So I'm finding references to it being both a 1300 and a 1600. I can't figure this one out - anyone?

#AB 880 242

Thanks!

A quick scan of online listings says 1600; 1300 motors are F engines.

http://type2.com/bartnik/enginecodes.htm

You have a 1600 with an oil pressure relief valve. I am pretty sure yours maybe a dual port with that code, because it was a universal case from 1966-1979.

Check this out though. And there are a lot of places that say it too:

Okay, this could get complicated. In the US there were no engine options in a given year-- you got the sole engine that VWoA decided to import. But in other markets you could get older engines and different displacements. And of course people swapped engines easily once they bought the cars.

Also remember that the case geometry was almost unchanged from the 1300-up, at least in that it used the longer stroke crank/rods, and with little or no machining, could take larger P/Cs and newer heads. So a new block could be configured as a 1300, 1500, 1600, single or dual intakes.

So a table set up for US models will give one answer, and those from other markets will give different, or even multiple answers.

So the case code will tell you about the case, but not give you definitive displacement info.

AFAIK there were some German or Euro based A* code cases shipped over here over the years that do not match our tables we reference. I have seen AD cases before. They are late model dual releif 8mm studs with factory case inserts and had a 69mm crank and 77mm pistons and cyls ( 1300 ) with some Euro only issued small valve dual port heads and a smaller sized intake center section with a smaller 31 Pict 3 carb.

BUT that does not mean the case was not used/rebuilt into a 1600 at some point.

IF you know what your looking at the cylinders ( shape/fins) can tell if it 77mm jugs or not. Otherwise you would have to tear into it and take at least one head off.

It has dual Kadron carbs. Here's a pic of the engine:

My bet/best guess is it is a 1600 and was just rebuilt using that case... many of them made it over as "german cores" for rebuilders over here in the 80's early 90's....
