I think some heads (with larger ports) take a smaller plug. I know my NGKs are smaller than the Bosch Supers.

True. 11/32" is dinky though -- about 1/3"!

John Muir says to use a 21mm deep socket for spark plugs. Laughing

For the longest time plugs have only come in 2 sizes, 13/16 or 21mm and 5/8 or 16mm. Yes I know that long ago they had them in about 1 inch and some oddball ones are 18mm {kawasaki motorcycle} and lately Ford used 9/16 but the vast majority of all engines use the first 2 sizes I mentioned.

All VWs used 13/16...21mm from the factory.
Check to see if a protion of your plug wire stayed stuck on the plug. Do not use a standard deep socket. Get a proper plug socket. It has a rubber liner to help protect the plug from cracking.

Some 14mm plugs for small engines take a 3/4" (19mm) wrench.
