If you ar changing from stock, make sure you determine the new compression ratio. CR will determine timing, and timing is important for a good-running EFI motor. My rebuilder used to shim the barrels to keep it down, especially when unleaded gas came out.

I would research the notorious unreliability of the 1776 before diving in. quote]

I have a 1776 in my '72 beetle and have never had a problem. It is driven daily with my than 15,000 miles on it. It's even been driven 600 miles within a single day a couple of years ago with no trouble. Also, on more than one occasion the engine has seen the better side of 5500 rpm's, NEVER giving me a problem.

Hello,

I have read lots of discussions about inproving hp on a stock FI.

I have a 78 beetle with 1600FI, I want to put a 1776 in but want to keep the stock FI, will this work?

Or do i need to change or add larger injectors, cam, crankshaft, heads .... ?.

I dont want to make a "race machine" but a daily driver.

Thanks.

I have a 1776 and stock fuel injection in my Notch. It works, but requires adjusting the MPS to achieve the proper AFR. On the advice of Tram, I just swapped out the stock injectors for some larger ones (blue Mercedes). I'll find out this weekend how they affect performance...

Thank you for your reply, did you try the larger injectors, and how dit it work on your engine? how can you adjust the MPS for the proper AFR? how much increase of HP is expected with 1776?

Thanks

The larger injectors seem to be working well. I now have a smoother idle and my AFR readings are less "wonky".

You can adjust the AFR by adjusting the internal screw inside the MPS. If your MPS still has the resin seal covering the large slotted plug, it will need to be removed, along with the plug. Then a small flat-head screw driver can be inserted and the internal screw adjusted. Clockwise = leaner, counter-clockwise= richer. Be sure to note how many turns it takes to remove the large plug because it will need to be re-installed the same way.

There are numerous discussions on this mode here on the Samba which can provide more details...

You should have plenty of power for hills etc. Keep a stock camshaft in it or you are asking for trouble. Tram adjusts the MPS & AFR on my '69 FI/AT with a small screw driver while a meter is clipped to the tailpipe.

You can also pull it apart and adjust it internally going in opposite direction 1/8 of a turn at a time or so to achieve the same results without disturbing the setting of the big plug.

This gives you an opportunity to clean the oil out of the unit with electrical cleaner. Note the O ring that seals the two halves isn't present in this pic. This procedure is applicable to C/D systems only. A/B and E are different.

Unfortunately, you have a '78 beetle which uses a different fuel injection system than the type 3's.

Right, but on a Beetle, Bus injectors will provide the additional fuel flow needed for a 1776. He'll be adjusting the mixture on the air flow meter rather than the MAP.

So I had an 1835 using the f/i with a w100 cam, and had to up the fuel pressure and adjust the sensor, we did it on a dyno with a sniffer and it did run a bit lean, buit i wasnt beating it sensless. Currently im going to try a 1776 using another efi setup and another w100 cam. Valve size is barely going up about one or two mil's aabove a stocker, mostly cause i dont want a race engine, but want a bit better uhmph for utah's retarded hilly terrain. I've never really heard of a 1776 being unreliable so far, and i've seen a few that were well maintained last good lives. Far as the power gain i think its worth it to go from a 1580ish (1600) to the 1776 rather then 1641, but I haven't run a 1641 yet Wink .

I finished the upgrade to 1776cc with FI, runs great, only adjustment made is setting the AFM a bit more "Rich".

Used items:
-Stock Cam
-Mahle Cilinder set 1776cc
-Heads Autolinea 35mm intake and 32mm exhaust
-Set compression 8.0:1

Thank you all for advice

Do yourself a favor and go with the blue/ green D-Jet injectors for a 412, Volvo, or Mercedes D-Jet car.

Hi Tram,

What will be the advantage for switching to these blue/green injectors? And do you have a part#. for these injectors?
The engine is now running on Bosch part# 280150112.

Thank you,
