I've got a '61 that the PO knew next to nothing about. I know it's been adapted to fit a 12V flywheel.
The engine also appears to sit further back than it should - the rear tin sits about an inch away from the firewall. Are the bus transmissions longer than a bug's?
The case ID on the tranny is 5488292, part #113.301.103
Any help is appreciated. Thanks. |

Baywindow bus transmissions are longer.
113 is a type 1 part number. |

The trans serial# you provided dates to Jan. '63. Should be a Type 1 trans.

Do you mean the backside of the fan shroud, or the rear tin above the bell housing? |

I mean the rear tin above the bell housing.
I've already pulled the engine so I can't take a proper pic of the spacing of the tin. But here's are a few picture of the tranny for what it's worth. You can (kind of) tell in the last picture that there's no letter in front of the numbers.
It has a solid transmission mount and urethane clutch fork bushing, as you can see. |

Looks like a Bug trans to me...Your pics don't really show how it lines up with the firewall, but it could be that solid mount thats off a little.
The trans numbers shouldn't have a letter before them like engine numbers. |

You have a late model 12v engine in the car ? It is wider, this causes the rear tin to sit about 1 - 1.5" to the rear that where it would in a later car as the engine compartments are a different shape & size. _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Woodstock, IL |

The tranny looks fine.
Unless you're only planning to drag race the car, you need to install a stock cradle and rubber mounts, otherwise you'll be paying big dental bills due to your teeth knashing. (Urethane front mounts are also junk. Get OEM German.) |

I do - the engine is a '71 (I think) 1600. Will a 1600 tin set work, or is the gap pretty much just the way it is and live with it? I'm rebuilding the engine as a street 1914 with all new parts, so I want to get everything as perfect as possible while it's apart.
Thanks. |

You will only be able to tell what fits your engine compartment by trial and error. |
