I'm not real knowledgeable on EMPI stuff, but I was looking through this motoring guide I picked up recently and it showed Bus roofracks and all sorts of other crazy stuff I've never heard of before and will probably never see.

So that got me thinking, what is the rarest and craziest EMPI stuff out there. I know some of you folks have insane collections, so post it up and educate us peons of the VW world.

This has been done so many times, anything in the catalog is rare, some stuff more sough after than others. Anything NOS in the package brings the most money
but the EMPI craze has died down, last year it was going crazy, EMPI steering wheels selling for 700-800 for used ones. Gauges selling for astronomical prices around 1500 for a set

they have definetely died down a lot, EMPI stuff is not bringing that much money anymore
supply and demand

I understand that homie. I was hoping to get a decent thread of the rarest of the rare EMPI stuff, I searched and didn't find one. I don't really care what the stuff is worth, don't care if it is in the package, I just want to see a thread of mega-cool, hardly ever seen EMPI shizzle.

I'll start it off.

I think these are rare as it's the only set I have seen:

They might not be that desirable though since they are Type 3.

How does a set of pistons & cylinders rank in the rare category?

I don't really follow EMPI stuff.

Once traded 3 gauges and the mounts to a friend a couple of years ago for some semaphore posts.

if they are NOS not sitting on a shelf because you pulled them from a seized engine.

They are not NOS and they are not from a seized engine. The engine is in my '65 deluxe. I replaced #3 & #4 pistons and cylinders when I lost compression in them. Those are in my garage. #1 & #2 are still in the engine 150,000 miles later.

There;s people out there who have had some pretty amazing EMPI scores over the years, I was one of them, in that I found Richard Guarino, who ran EMPI East, Competition Car Parts of new York, on Boston Post Road in the Bronx, New York. I had the original Speedwell seats from the car, the custom steering wheel, and even Richards original firesuit and gloves, if anyone remembers the "Guarino's Gold" story in Hot VWs some years back, that was me. I speak with Richard often (this morning, in fact) even though I sold off the Guarino Collection to another private collector in 2005.
I don't think it's all that rare, but I have a cherry, 15 inch, GTV wheel, signed by Joe Vittone...That, and a few trinkets (mailing labels, official EMPI letterhead stationary and envelopes, bumper stickers, and maybe, best of all, a brass dash plaque from EMPI of New York, from the 1969 New York Auto Show) are pretty much all I have left.
I have never ever seen any other dash plaques, and at one time, I had 11 of them.. I gave a very few away, and sold the rest to the un-named collector...I've heard they sell for stupid money, when (and if) they come up for sale... and mine isn't going to. Cool

How about the EMPI valve covers with the GT on them. I've seen exactly one (not a pair) for sale. I presume they are early versions of the oft repoped ones.
