Processor is irrelevant unless you have a very special application.
Look for good reviews on the brand and model. But more memory and disc space than you need and don't look back. |

Still using dialup?
I recently bought this to drive my older flat screen TV. The provided app on the TV are old and out dated. It was $129 at the time.

Windows 11 Professional
8gb memory

Add a wireless keyboard for $30 and it does the job.

1.If you are making a big jump in models watch out for the space the OS requires. See how much space you currently use, double it, add the new OS size , and buy that much disk space
2. Back market is a great place to buy used stuff at about 1/3 of current new , a generation or two removed. _________________ .ssS! |

From 10 years ago, going back to 1985, I was a PC person. Then we had three PC laptops fail in three years. Name brands. Dell, HP. Two of our kids suggested that we go with a MacBook. We have been mac people ever since.
It really just works. And is reliable. Our first MacBook is 12 years old now and still quite functional.
Yes, I understand. It is quite a bit more expensive. I just got tired of failure. _________________ Larry in OB

Thats because you bought consumer products. I only buy Dell Optiplex desktops and Latitude laptops, they are business class.
Last year I replaced my 9 year old Optiplex desktop that ran great, but not worth upgrading from Windows 7 to 11.
I have a 7 year old Latitude laptop that had Windows 10 and I ungraded to 11 . It still does the job. _________________ Glenn

If you have Wifi in your house, a tablet is simple, easy to use, fairly cheap. No keyboard or mouse though
Dells are quiet, reliable, but only use Dell spare parts |

Unless you are gaming or video editing it doesn't really matter, both are quality processors. Then you would also want at least 32GB of RAM and a 4GB 128 bit Graphics Card and I'm running an AMD Radeon RX 550x.
Currently I'm running an Intel i7 dual core 4.0Ghz as that was what the mother board I wanted was built for. The AMD mother boards were a more expensive for the same functionality.
If you are buying a packaged computer you will pay through the nose for this type of setup as it's a "Gaming Computer"-which I also have two gaming laptops, but got those for about $1k each. (MSI and Acer).
As stated you will need a large hard drive at LEAST 1 TB hard drive to run your OS and if you do any kind of photo or video work it goes fast. Make sure it has a Solid State hard drive, no more moving parts or spinny disks, way faster and more reliable.
not going to get into the Mac PC thing. _________________ '56 pan Dune Buggy since '69

Thanks YDBM. This confirms what I was leaning towards. I'm not a gamer. The Intel i5 with 12G ram and 1T memory is more than my current 8 years old desktop and in the price range I was willing to spend. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

Nope, I have high speed Internet through Cox.
I use a Dell Latitude E6520 laptop with Windows 7, was set up that way when I bought it from a guy who sold used computers. I liked it because it had a CD/DVD drive; however, that no longer works even though the software claims it is working properly. So I bought an external USB CD/DVD drive for it for $20 through Amazon, significantly less expensive than having someone repair or replace the built-in drive.
I use a USB mouse with this, don't know how to use the touchpad. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Nothing comes on CD/DVD, everything is downloaded off the internet. Both my desktop and laptop don't have external drives.
My suggestion for a machine that will provide plenty of performance and last a long time is the following:
Intel i7 processor
16gb memory
512gb solid state drive
With cloud storage so cheap the only reason you need more on your local machine is your downloading too much porn. My last machine only had 128gb storage and I had plenty of family pictures on it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Refurbished PCs are a great way to save... if you don't need the bleeding edge stuff.
2 years ago I replace the 8 year old desktops running Windows 7, at my synagogue, with 3 year old off lease Dell Optiplex desktops that were refurbished... reloaded. Windows 10 Professional, Intel i7 8th generation, 16gb memory, 256 SSD storage and WiFi. They cost $300 each and were originally over $1100. The staff loves them and they still get the job done and are running supported software.
The executive board liked them so much they gave me a budget to put one with a 40" flat screen in ever classroom in our school. _________________ Glenn

You don't need to buy a 1TB drive. Because if you need that much you might as well get a 2TB drive.
You need an antivirus program, I use Norton 360. It comes with free cloud storage. I backup my system to it daily. That way I have both extra storage and offsite backup of my data. _________________ Glenn

What do you want to do with it.
No one can make suggestions unless we know the intended uses for this machine.
You want to watch movies on Netflix, that is one thing.
You want to work with photos and videos of the grand kids that is a VERY different thing.
BTW I have made my living as a "geek" starting in 1983, a short time off to turn wrenches. Last 23 at a cop shop doing "computer" work. |

Storage is easy to physically replace, but you need to clone the drive to get the OS and data over. _________________ Glenn
