Anyone know where I can pick up some blue/grey seat covers? TMI apparently doesn't make them and Wolfsburg West couldn't answer my question, as they don't carry them. I need a full set, including a full-size middle seat.

If you mean aero-papyrus, good luck.

Nope, not aero papyrus. Blue/grey as shown in the technical section of this site.

those places would have been the first places I tried. I would put a wanted ad out in the classifieds and see who else may know something.

I have been hunting for vinyl fabrics for intent on re-doing my blue grey interior. (what's there is either not original or pretty trashed). I am going to use panels from Clara and do the panel fabrication myself. For the seats, I have pretty good covers (non-original) to work from, and I think my wife can sew them. If not, there are plenty of upholstery shops in the phone book.

One thing I noticed is that where the fabric has been protected from the elements, the lighter color fabric is a light blue grey. It tends to yellow over the years giving it an almost green tint.

To match the heat pleated charcoal fabric on the panels I found this. I have samples and side by side it's almost extact. For the panels I will have to carefully remove the foam backing, but that looks pretty simple from the sample. There is also a med. grey pleated foam backed fabric for the seat tops. This fabric also comes unpleated so that seat sides, backs and panel bottoms can be matched.

As for welting, Gary's has a good selection there too...

What I have had difficulty locating is the blue grey diamond patterned vinyl used in the center of the panels. The closest I have found is this...

http://www.denverfabrics.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/23000/23042_85-600.jpg

The pattern is too small and the silver could be more blue grey. I may punt and use the smooth med. grey vinyl from above on the panels.

Lenny sells it, although I don't know if it is an EXACT match.

Blue/Grey is one of the worst material for fading so most people don't even know what it looked like originally.

I can tell by the deep dark tucked in areas of my middle seat.

Yes, that is the best way.

That's what I've seen. I have one NOS panel and none of the used originals I have come across match it..all are color changed.

I've got two early '61 deluxe models and have been looking for this interior myself for two years. It's a tough interior to match as the embossed checker pattern is quite unique, let alone the colors. Lenny's is the closest thing I've seen and it's not exact in either color or pattern. I wouldn't use it if I was attempting to replicate the real deal, but if "close" was good enough it's the one I would go with of everything I've seen.

If a person was ambitious and/or obsessed enough they could have the stuff manufactured to exact spec. The set up costs and initial run quantities required are very expensive. I believe about a year ago Doug Denlinger inquired of this forum if there was enough interest in the vinyl to justify the large investment and there was not.

Can you post a picture of your most unfaded original for color matching purposes? Thanks. It would be nice to have a photograph of that NOS panel StephenMullens has too, so it can be compared to Lenny's work here...

what about the humpseat front seat?
AFAIK, TMI/WW don't offer the front seat cover for the humpseat. My April 61 takes the basalt interior, and has a humpseat. The earlier flat seat covers wouldn't fit right. And the padding is differnt too..

A few years ago I re-did the bottom of the seat with padding and upholstery off the backseat of a '77 bus... more comfy than spring sticking out, cheaper than buying new, but not correct material. But better than shelling out hundreds for not the correct stuff, doesn't fit right, either.

Thanks for taking those photos. How off do you think the colors are? They look very close to my best originals.

If we assume the colors on that NOS panel are pretty true, I think Lenny's dark grey isn't dark enough. The dark grey on the NOS panel is more charcoal than a medium grey, and even the diamond stamped vinyl is a bit darker than Lenny's.

Lenny's...

The one conclusion I can draw, it will be damn near impossible to replicate the blue grey interior without making some concessions, and Lenny's version is stunning.
