|
|
I am looking into getting a freeway flier and i doubt my 1600 dp with 34 pict and stock bus muffler would be able to push it along that well...
My question is what are the limits that a stock 34 pict carb and bus muffler can run?
1776, 1914??
I am looking to build a stronger motor but I do want it to appear to be stockish..
Just something that will be able to cruise well on the highway.
I don't really want to go dual carbs because I have a nice eberspacher i plan on putting in someday. _________________ 66 Bus

I have a mexi 1600 and a 4.12 freeway flyer (.89 4th).
The engine has a 34pict. Except for the header and muffler,
it's stock.
I drove up to N.C. from S. Florida and cruised at 70-75mph
the whole way, if not faster. The hills weren't great(slowed down) but nothing bad. I was getting between 27-30mpg, this with a loaded down single cab.
Some are going to say a 1600 can't push a freeway flier and will
overheat. I had zero probs and ran cool all the way up. If I
had to change I'd probably opt for a 1776 with a 34pict or 40mm k-dogs.
But the motor has less than 7000 miles so I'm happy for now.
I wouldn't go with anthing bigger than a 1776 with the 34 pict. IMHO

Hi Birdmanhere,
Which FF tranny gearing are you thinking of going? We went with a 3.875 R&P, 1964-67 RGBs and .82 fourth. Running a CW cranked SP with slip in 1641 P&Cs. Runs great and after getting all the right parts it stays cool. Not going to win any uphill races against a V-8, but can stay up with the faster semis when climbing.
Have known quite a few volks over the years that have run up to 1776 sized engines, with single carb or even small dual carbs on SP heads. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I plan on a 3.88 with .82 fourth and big nut boxes.
I will probably try it first with my 1600, maybe add some 1.25 rockers.
If I do go 1776 would it be advisable to keep stock heads and cam? _________________ 66 Bus

If you are going to cruise near about 3,000 RPM. Then stick with stock SP heads and cam. Getting anything much more fancy can easily reduce your lower end torque which you need to get moving with. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

That is easy to change!
A friend of our's up here ran a 1776 SP engine with small dual carbs, and was still able to fit in the factory installed Eberspacher. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

A 1600 will turn a freeway flyer just fine near sea level. Up in the hills and mountains you will find 4th gear to be useless for going uphill, but 3rd gear will work as you expect. A 1776 might be nice, but not essential. You can run a stock muffler, carb and cooling system with the 1776. |

I ran this for a good while with a stock 1600 sp. It didn't quite have the power to push it, and always ran on the hotter side, but at the same time, it just kept going and going. If you do a mild 1776, you will probably be more than happy with the setup. _________________ -Andrew |

I recently purchased a 66 D/C with a basically 'stock' 1776 dog house dual port in it.
34 PICT carb, stock valve train, stock oil bath air cleaner, SVDA, heater boxes and a single quite pack extractor exhaust.
It's willing and peppy and never seems to get hot. I shift at 4-4.2K and it feels like it would still make power for another 2-300rpm.
I still have my RGBs and I'm pretty sure I have a 4:37 gearbox. I turn 3500rpm at 55mph, and that's where I cruise.
My buddy has a 67 Deluxe (4:12? w/ RGB) with a 1600 dual port in it and he runs just a touch over 3K at 55mph and so is always running at 60 or better.
Having driven his Deluxe a number of times I feel I could step down from 4:37 down to 4:12 in my D/C without really noticing, but I doubt I could step down to a 3:88 without ill effect.
On level ground it wouldn't really be an issue but on any grade or hill the final drive, even with RGB, may be to tall for anything less than 2 liter torque.
I wouldn't recommend to my buddy that he step down from his 4:12 to a 3:88 for that same reason, unless he was going to run a larger motor as well.
