hi there. i thought some people might find this kind of funny.
Holliday Lake, a local state park that we like to go to is having a 35th anniversary celebration and they tracked us down last week and asked if we were the people who had camped there before in a 70s VW camper. when i told them yes they were very excited and said that they're about to have a living history weekend to celebrate the park's anniversary and they wondered if we would like to represent the 70s when the campground opened by camping out in our bus and being on the tour. of course, we said hell yes, with the one tiny flaw that our bus is currently in pieces in the driveway but thanks to mid america motorworks the new cylinder head should here tomorrow and we should be up and running in time for the event. they're paying for our camping and lake fees for the weekend and everything. kind of cool.
so i've been thinking of different ways to camp seventies style. we'll put some tie dye shirts on the kids but does anyone have any suggestions? our bus doesn't have the original interior but it looks pretty trippy so i imagine that it will go over well. but can anyone think of little things we can set out to make us look more authentic? i was thinking of having the fondue pot on the picnic table and a six pack of tab but other than that i'm at a loss. i don't remember much of the 70s seeing as how i was kind of little.
any ideas?
Very Happy

Blast some good 70s tunes
redo the interior with shag
Get some old bumper stickers like "gas, grass, or ass", or dead head stickers
grow a sweet mustache

I'm seeing cut-off jean shorts, terry cloth halter top (females!), bandana in the hair.

For campsite games, Jarts was popular (real big darts that you tossed into a ring on the ground) until they outlawed it due to fatalities from errant throws.

Food: Hamburger Helper, Spam

That's all that comes back to me for now...

You definitely to have something tie-dyed. Peace flag, curtains, something. Incense flowing from all corners of the bus with flowers and beads baby!

A piece of tall grass hanging out of one of your mouths while your making the 'peace' sign. Some aviator style sunglasses, t-shirts that are too tight, bell-bottoms, and wear a watch with a band that is about double the width of today's. A nice mustache (as suggested above) is another good option.

I had more hair in the 70's (actually a lot more hair) and of course was totally happening even back then.

I loved that game at picnics when I was a kid!
I remember pimento cheese spread sandwiches. Making Smores. Throwing horseshoes. Playing Yahtzee, Battleship (not electronic), Mad Libs, Car Bingo, Lincoln Logs, Tinkertoys, Kerplunk.
There was also a kids version of Jarts that didn't have the metal tips - not as fun!!!
I don't remember seeing that many tie-dyes back then. I saw them later in the 80's/90's. The shirts I remember were iron-on stuff - Keep On Truckin', Trans-Ams, dragons/fantasy stuff, Led Zeppelin, Star Wars, etc.

great stuff guys! thanks for all the ideas!
i'm the same age as my bus so i need to go back and look at my baby pictures to refresh my memory.
it's kind of tricky because sensibility-wise there's a fine line between 70s nostalgia and the creepy old-school porn look.
we're trying to go with the former.
keep 'em coming. i knew i could count on you guys! Very Happy

how about a plug in color organ ( the speaker looking thing that flashes to the beat).
grow some sideburns.

do you have a vintage store nearby? ots of them popping up. maybe get some good ideas there.

Even if none of you play, no 70's campsite would be complete without a guitar and tambourine. Cool

Sorry, but the 70's WERE the creepy old school porn look. Lots of hair, big sideburns, tight pants, zipper boots with heels, and cheap gold chains. That was the guys, for the women it was big hair and blow dryers.

The clothes went from creepy Blue Denim porn look, to the Saturday Night Fever white suit look, to the Magnum PI look, but the rest stayed the same.

In the middle was that long national nightmare we called the Bicentennial Celebration where everything, and I mean everything, was Red, White and Blue. If you weren't there you simply can't imagine the horror that was 1976.

wow. i'm really happy that my only memories of the 70s are of sesame street and H.R. Puffenstuff. wait, as i type H.R. Puffenstuff now as a grownup i'm pretty sure that means more than i thought it did when i was five.
this event is happening the first weekend in august so we have plenty of time to prepare.
and don't worry there will be plenty of pix.
thanks again for all the help!

magnum pi was glitzy coked up crap and ran from 1980-88, ushering in new era of self righteousness that ran rampant in the 80s, along with miami vice..

for 70's cheese, you may want to think more along the lines of the six million dollar man, Hawaii 5-0 (best show EVER), wonder woman, kojak, baretta.....
