Thanks alot for all the feedback. It's really helpful
After some consideration I think it might be nice to set up at some of the east coast shows and meet new and different V-Dubbers.
We have a gus sucking pig of an SUV so I suppose I could load up and hit the road.
It seems everyone set up with no prices. I for one and not fond of doing business that way.
I guess I will start planning for 3-4 shows in 2008 with the goal of returning home with nothing but good memories |
As a seller, I find it much easier to remember what the prices are if they are tagged.
As a buyer, I seldom ask prices if they are not marked, unless it is something that I really, really want. I get tired of asking "how much is that. How much is --that. What's the price of this one." Of course, that
cuts down on my impulse buying, but it makes me wonder what the price would be for somebody else. |
As a buyer, I don't really mind one way or the other.
If the price is right, I won't haggle, If it is too high, I may ask "would you take <normal price - a couple of bucks>.
With the prices on, you do get a quick sense of what kind of seller this person is. If all the prices are consistently higher, I usually don't bother haggling and just keep moving. |

I've never sold at the swaps but have always wanted to. One of my main concerns is dealing with security. I have a butt load of parts to bring and I'm not sure I would be able to keep an eye on it all at once. I suppose I could con some friends into helping keep an eye on things, or just have a .357 resting by the cash box! Any suggestions on keeping would-be looters at bay? (and I don't want any comments like "don't bring Heineken") _________________ 1964 Type 1 |

It depends on how you lay out your parts. Larger, heavy parts outside to the front, smaller parts on a table close to you. Some people have chicken wire or closable boxes with the GOOD stuff in them. _________________ '63 Ragtop |

Seriously, is stealing a big issue?
I've never sold at a swap (well, maybe helped a friend once or twice) but never realized it was.. |

I've even seen some bigger-named-Samba-guys take a nice bin full of good parts and dump it onto the ground in front of folks.

Never have a problem with that. There are some people I have dealt with at shows, who are on the Samba occasionally, who are the most tight-fisted buyers you'd ever see. One guy literally throws a temper tantrum when you tell him the price. Another time, I was getting rid of a box full of stuff, and when he saw another buyer gleefully digging through the box and pulling parts, Mr Tightwad decided my price wasn't so bad after all. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. The "big" shows are the only places I have heard of problems. Just keep attention to what is going on. I set up at Manassas a few times and never had a problem (with stealing) but I have heard of problems. |

Reviving an old thread after seeing some poor swap meet etiquette last weekend.
A seller is waiting to get parked & unload, folks are looking over his stuff in his truck/trailer, asking prices on certain iteams, one guy ask's about a seat, the seller gives a price , and another dude jumps in with a "I'll take it!", kind of a dick move I thought, so did the guy that got "claim jumped", and others near by, the 1st guy didn't have a chance to say anything. I was kind of bummed the seller sold it to the 2nd guy. _________________ Tom

One can be a polite vulture though. Ask first if it's a bother. Offer to help with the trans and front beam unloading, etc.. Chances are you'll earn his first deal. But I do agree that just tearing in and delaying a guy with stupid questions is general douchebaggery. _________________

I’ve been a vendor for many years and found most buyers to be pleasant. There’s always a certain few that want to haggle which is why I price at full retail and say something like “ these things sell for 100 new but I had it priced at 60 but if you buy it right now I’ll take 50” give the consumer the perception they are receiving a good value and they will usually buy, that works. Never a problem with theft but then again we don’t vend at some inner city shithole either. That rudeness of trying to push someone out the way to get something would not be tolerated by me. I’d give the first person a chance to decide then go to second, that’s just common sense. |

To advise (as I learned a long time ago at Pomona, at 5 AM...) If you are that number 1 person, don't set that beautiful commercial (black) bus steering wheel down for a SECOND while you look for your wallet! _________________
