Did you know if you use USPS to ship a package without purchasing insurance they have NO responsibility for the package?!?! I recently had a set of wheels shipped to me in two boxes. One arrived in 7 days the other took 20. While waiting for the box I got worried and called the post office and learned something new.

ME: “I had a package shipped to me two weeks ago that hasn’t shown up”
USPS: “Was it insured?”
ME: “I don’t think so”
USPS: “If the package was not insured we are not responsible for it”
ME: “then what are you charging me for?”
USPS: “for shipping”
ME: “But what if it doesn’t get shipped?”
USPS: “That’s not our responsibility”
ME: “How can you charge to ship a package and not ship it?”
USPS: “If it’s not insured we are not responsible for it.”
ME: “If it never shows up can I at least get the shipping money back?”
USPS: “No, The shipping charge is not refundable”

So…Does this mean I could start an auto repair shop and if I “lose” someone’s car that they dropped off for an oil change it’s not my responsibility?

Should I ask for insurance at Wendy’s when I pay at window 1 so when I get to window 2 if they’ve lost my food I can get my money back?

How can they legally charge for a service you may or may not receive?
They could just throw your package away and keep the money if you don’t insure it.

Fortunately my wheels did show up. But if they hadn’t I would have been SOL!

I'm sending off 3 packages tomorrow via USPS. I'll be certain to ask these same quetions while I am getting insurance for the items.

You expected a straight answer or efficiency from a government agency? Shipping is always a gamble no matter who you choose to carry out the task. I know of someone who worked for "Canpar", which is a large courier in Canada. He says that a lot of times if a box was shipped with "Sony" or some other label indicating there were goodies inside, they would mysteriously disappear before they were loaded onto the trucks. I have shipped paint work to high profile clients and had pics turn up on the internet before the package was ever received by them. Fuckers who knew who I was and what was in the box would open them up and take pics before they shipped them.

well, atleast you got a package to ship. i tried to send out a clutch and the prick said i can't send this out it smells like gasoline what is inside, i told him a clutch,

him: yep thos have gas on them i can't ship it.
me:a brand new clutch has nothing on it.
him: well it smells like gas.
me: it's not gas it's paint thinner because i spilt some in my truck bed the other day.
him: oh so it's covered in paint thinner? i could have you arrested for trying to send something like that out you didn't disclose it had paint thinner.
me: you know what, fuck it i'll go to fed ex

30 minutes later at the fed ex place

thank you mr. denning you have a wonderful day. the box didn't really smell that bad either. he was snorting my box like it was crack on a mirror.

Seriously, USPS sucks ass:
A while back I bought some heater channels off a guy. He wanted a money order so sent him one, registered and expedited through the USPS.
I was told the check would be there in two days but the delivery speed was not assured.
Two or three days, give or take half an axe handle, is what I figured. How slow can it possibly be, right?

Two days roll by: no check.
A week rolls by: no check - so I call. Apparently, just because you send things expedited, does not mean it gets there expedited. I could take up to two weeks - who knew?
Another two weeks roll by: no check. I call USPS again. Apparently, a letter is not considered lost until a month has passed but they promised to look into it.

I didn't want the poor guy to have to wait even longer and also didn't want to look like a deadbeat so I cancelled the first check, got another MO and sent it fedex.
He receives the second MO no problem.

About a week after I got the channels - over a month after I sent the first check - I receive an email from the seller, saying he finally received the first check!

Cancelling a money order is a pain as well: it took another month before I got my money back.

Damn, I've never had an issue with the USPS in almost eight years of hawking and buying literally tens of thousands fragile 78RPM records all over the world via eBay and the website I used to have. Parts and phonographs I usually send via Fed Ex. UPS stands for "Unbelieveably Poor Service" IMHO. And then, there's DHL.... Not. Rolling Eyes Everytime I ship or receive via UPS or DHL there's a problem.

I dont think so. I beleive the 1st hundred dollars worth of insurance is $1.30, and go up from there....aint nuthin free at USPS, except priority mailing containers.

last time i shipped a package internationally with USPS, even though i declined the optional insurance, the package was insured for approximately 3/4 of the declared value against loss or damage. good thing too, 'cause they sure lost the shit.

"Free" insurance is only on Priority shipments and is LIMITED to $100. I have never made a claim but I would guess that it's a major clusterfuck if you ever had to.

The reason they can get away with not being responsible for lost mail is that non-insured parcels are not tracked individually as they are with UPS and others. It has no more tracking than a regular stamped letter, it basically just has a big stamp on it and hopefully it will get there. (At least that's how a former employee once explained it to me.)

We have cluster boxes and what irks me is finding one of those "Sorry we missed you" notices in the box, then I have to drive down to the P.O. to get the stupid letter. The mailman can't walk 50 feet to my house and give me my mail.

A few years ago we were doing some legal stuff for my mother-in-laws estate. I would find the Certified letters with the green return receipts still attached on the back of the letter in the box. The first time I signed the receipt and put it back in the box but after that I just threw them away.

I especially enjoy the stories of letters that are "Found" somewhere in the USPS system that were postmarked back in the 50's, and then they miraculously appear...

When the carrier does that, you take everything to your post office and complain to the manager.
