For the suitcase, just go to a flea market, rummage sale, garage sale of antique store, this one had a price of $7.50 on it...
For the antenna, i just used a 2 post antenna for a Bug, and it fits inside the suitcase, may be temporary, maybe not.
What do you mean by lighter plug? _________________ (O\U|U/O) Top Vw (o\UU/o) |

These things are available at Radio Shack. They also have new sockets - so you can put one in the back by the battery, and still use your other one for cell phone or ipod FM transmitter. _________________ 1969 Ghia

You can put them anywhere - they come with a mounting bracket (which you can remove and drill a hole). I put one under my dash - and use the FM transmitter up there. Then if I make my "lunchbox" version I would put one in back as well. With a plug hanging out of my box to plug it in, for easy removal.
Something like these:
I could only find pictures of the 3 outlet unit, they do make a simpler one outlet unit. _________________ 1969 Ghia

I used a 4-flat trailer wiring harness for a quick disconnect. _________________ (O\U|U/O) Top Vw (o\UU/o) |

Moved up from the lunchbox plan back to suitcase. I don't plan on having any speakers mounted to the case. I'll have to keep mine either open or use fans for cross flow.
case closed
Deck face and amp.
Deck mount and crossovers.
I have separate 6x9's in cabinets, and some tweeter horns and a sub woofer. I cant see needing more than that in a ghia. I think my amp may overheat. _________________ 1969 Ghia

...Bump...
I have a small suitcase which is shaped to fit the rear luggage compartment of a Beetle; I am considering converting it into a subwoofer box for maybe a 10" speaker. How would I best go about this (I know very little about car audio)? It's constructed of a quite light cardboard like material; would I have to make it completely rigid inside with MDF or would it be sufficient to completely line it on the inside with some kind of acoustic deadening material?
I'm not looking to make my ears bleed or anything, just some rich bass from the back. _________________ Do not follow me, for I may not lead. Do not lead me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either; actually just bugger off and stand over there will you. |

you could fiberglass it which is used for speakers all the time. another thing accured to me as i was reading this thread and that is you guys with suitcase systems could do away with your deck and just run an amp and some speakers and hook your ipod up to your amp. i have done it before in cars and have the some 6x9's in my boat hooked up that way too. |

sorry for never checking back in after posting this thread years ago.
germanstyle. you are correct. thats what i ended up doing with mine. iPod connected to an RCA to input cable. signal passed through the amp and out the speakers. allowed it to be cheaper and lighter.
I dont have any pictures of mine on hand, but its similar to Disco Dave's from above, but larger and doesnt have the nice interior. Mine is built with wooden frame on the inside. The speakers are mounted on top of the frame/box, and holes were drilled all over the top (small) so it almost looks like the texture of the suitcase.
Very effective. Inexpensive. And on with the volume of the ipod on 3/4, it can be heard over a quarter mile away.....even through trees. =]
If you have any questions or want to see pictures or description of how I made mine, feel free to ask.

build a small bandpass enclosure out of mdf to fit in the case. It will accept fairly small single woofer, no more than 8". Even 8" are getting hard to find lately.
With bandpass you won't get big boom, but it will be deeper, cleaner sounding bass. And since you only vent with a small opening, speaker wont stick out like a sore thumb.
http://www.caraudiohelp.com/custom_car_audio_boxes/custom_car_audio_boxes.htm
It's harder to build, but I always liked bandpass more than any other type.
