|
|
Several years ago, I repainted the engine area in my '63 convertible. At the time, I removed the original worn tar board and replaced with waffle pattern replacements. I've never been happy with them. They car is very original, and to my eye they don't look right.
Does anyone make a set that approximate the look of the original?

KGP&R (Airhead Parts) has two styles of tar board for Ghias...the least expensive one is the waffle pattern. You'll have to call about the other to see if it's what you're looking for.

They're having a 20% off sale right now too. Discount code is MOV20. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

Yes, these waffles are more like what I have.
Any other suppliers in US or international? Thank you. |

Is the answer that they do not exist? Maybe my only option is to search for an original set? |

I used them, they are not as thick as the orignal stuff but they look more like the original ones since they don’t have the waffle pattern. They are also stiffer and don’t flop around like a piece of rubber like the cheap waffle ones do. I doubt you can find anything nicer at this time. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Many years ago I spoke with Vince (RiP) who was the original owner of a '65 Ghia Cabrio nearby in northern New Jersey. He refurbished it and during that time mentioned that his factory-original firewall insulation had broken up and wanted to replace it. Vince was a resourceful person and came up with the idea that the sound insulation from the back of a washing machine had a very similar texture and appearance to the factory sound panel. He found a large section from a junked machine, cut it to match the factory panel and attached it. Looked very convincing.
Another method would be to find an original tarboard even if it's partially broken or torn. Glue it back together using thin aluminum flashing on the back side to hold the pieces or joints together. Then apply roofing tar paper to the surface that you see in the engine compartment. Glue it on with contact cement and use a small roller to work out any air bubbles. The only issue then is that the thin flashing may prevent the triangular steel spikes on the firewall surface to pierce thru to hold the panel. |

I just got the Cip1 tar board set and it's actually very nice. The material is very close to the original tar board found on later Ghias. Unfortunately, it has cut outs for later Ghias, so I can't really use it on my 58 Ghia project. Its a shame they didn't omit the cut outs and provide a template to cut them out if you needed them. As stated above, they are about half as thick as original boards, but they are rigid and look nice. I still haven't found a good replacement for lowlight tar boards. |

That's not good. I looked and the description actually says it fits 56 to 74. Not much detail included in the description. Now it also says out of stock. _________________ Marc
