I'm hoping to look at a '74 here in MI, VERY rusty, but drivable. Owner only wants $950.00, just wondering if it might be worth it, or should I keep looking. Don't have any idea what they're worth, just always wanted one.

If you've always wanted one, then the price is right!
It's impossible to say whether it's worth it. If you're willing to spend some time and money to fix it up, it's worth it. If you're happy driving it as is until you can fix it up, it's worth it. There's plenty of discussions on the forum here about value.
Plus, if you save a Thing from the graveyard, you've done a great service to the planet. _________________ You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit.

How can you go wrong at that price?
You could always sell it for that much if you figure your in over your head.
Do it! |

For $950 and it's driveable. That's a GOOD price. HOWEVER, at that price be prepared to be spending money on repairs at a regular interval. But its better than buying stocks. At least you can determine when and how it's going to go up in value by adding sweat equity. _________________ Ya can't have too many Vdubs!

DaveinMI, I don't mean to hijack your thread and I hope you don't take it that way.
I just came across a '74 original white paint, never been hit, perfect original bumpers, hardtop with side curtains that have seen better days.
The only rust is on the right rear floor pan under seat, has original "AM" motor with skid plate under sump. Has factory installed A/C with all items still installed except for compressor(of course the hoses are dry and cracked). It drives but could stand a brake job.
This would be my first Thing so I'm not sure about how much one should expect to pay for it.
thanks for any info,

Thanks to all................but when I called back it was sold. I snoozed and lost I guess. From talking to him earlier, and the picture he sent me, it needed a floor, rockers were rusted out, front fenders were missing a couple inches due to rust too. It's great living in salty Michigan.
I enjoyed the links, and I'll keep watching for another. I've got a '73 Beetle already, so it's not like I need something more to do, I just like Things. |

ghiafreek, that sounds a lot like the Thing I just got. Except the rusty floor had already been repaired on mine. I traded a 78 Westy, 64 Notch project, and a pile of parts for mine. That sounds like a $3500-$4500 car here in TX. _________________ member of: Fort Worth Aircoolers Gang |

Did you mean it sounds like a particular Thing you saw in Tx going for that price or did you mean that it sounds like a Thing in Tx with my description would go for around $3500 - $4500?
Thanks,

Cool. Thanks for the link. The one I"m looking at is $1000 more but its about 20 minutes from me and I've seen it. NO Rust! You think it might be worth $1000 more given that it runs and its OG paint and has the factory air?

Is that a trick question? Factory air is a big deal and pretty rare - does it function?
$3500 is a good price. If you're uncertain, take some pics and post them and let the forum chew on issues it may see. |

I think is well worth a grand more for that fact alone.
If you start dealing with a torch, cutting and welding panels and sections, then refinishing, I think you will quickly see the logic.

These are bonuses you get on top of "NO Rust" for the extra grand.

If you put an add wanted 2500-3500 in thesamba you will get a lot of replies. Jut wait for a fairly non-rusty one. I's a lot easer to fixup drive train problems than rust. |
