Hey, has anyone that owns these wheels ever think about buying one extra for a spare or if the unthinkable dent or breakage happens? I was thinking about this the other day, and thought it would be nice to have an extra set around in case production cease's and no longer available Crying or Very sad

We asked about this when we bought our set. At that time they were only selling complete sets.

Some pics of my '55 project with 17" Raders.
The pan is a '61.
Tires are Yokohama S. Drive.Discount Tire did me right.
225-50-17 rear...the engine has a 200hp tune,so skinnies are out.
195-40-17 front...low,but wide enough to have grip.
Swing axles are '67.They leave about 3/4" between the tire and swing plate.
Front beam is a new 4" narrower link pin w/2 1/2 drop spindles,Chop Shop Aluminum tie rods.
I have the '55 body on it to check clearances.

heres my buddies car,
has 5.5 narrowed air beam, (no drop spindles in pic but they are now installed) stock drum brakes for now
1 inch wider empi rear disc brake kit on a short axle, airride also
it clears everything fine when aired up but the wheel rubs on the shock tower right by the body mount when aired down, im guessing extending the spring plates as its pitching the wheel forward when aired down

I have my fronts on but my rear is still on stock white walls. Laughing Here are some options:

2 of the 3/8 spacers stacked with long lug bolts

1 inch spacers with long bolts

Convert to 67 axles and brakes finding old parts

Convert to 68 axles with compatible wide 5 drums with all new parts

Convert to 1 inch wider rear disc brake kit (ac industries?)

Convert to 68 axles with aftermarket wide 5 disc conversion (ac industries, cb etc)

If anyone has another option, feel free to tack it onto the list

Hi guys,

Great thread which I have read from start to finish with some fantastic info!
I have a '59 Beetle with original drums and have just taken delivery of a set of Escra's. Trial fit indicated the usual touching of spring plates in the rear, front is ok for now with standard gear.

On order:
4.5" narrowed beam with 2.5" drop spindles.

Can anyone confirm how much the CB front wide 5 dropped disc kit will increase the FRONT track? Will they be ok with the Escra's? I won't be running crazy low, but low enough Smile

For the rear, i've heard that the '67 axles will give you around 1 inch increase in rear track? What I want to know is, can I just do a swap for the 67' long axles with short splines and re-use my standard 1200 beetle rear drums and need nothing else?

If not, which rear wide 5 disc kit will give me the clearance I need? Rear escras as running 205/45/ZR17 tyres for reference.

Any help appreciated! Smile

Anyone know where I can get a set of these in the states? Also what tire should I run in the rear of my 67 vert? Its dropped 2.75 inches. I was thinking 215/45/17? or 225/45/17? Which would be best? I am running 205/40/17 up front.

Francis, GR Wheels in the US stock them.

Tyre size will depend on your clearance but a 205/45/17 will fit, a 215 maybe.

I think we are looking like the annoying newbies who haven't used the search function Razz
Combined with the fact i've been lurking and not registered for over 5 years and been registered on the AussieVeedubbers forum since 2003, so I can see how i'd look like the annoying newbie!

I've gathered all the info from this thread, just hoping someone can pinpoint the quickest way for me to get that evasive 1" wider rear track Smile

If ur that low I think u should stick with 205s in the rear. That is what I am running and I am about 1.5 splines down in the rear and the tires rub on the springplate with heavy cornering. I ran short axles with a 1inch spacers at 1st and the rim would sometimes contact the body when cornering. I added empi wide 5 disc in the rear and it added enouch clearance the the rim doesnt touch anymore just the tire. I also run 195/40/17 up front with a 4inch narrowed beam.

GMN,

Thanks for your input. So you are saying that with:

Short Axles
1 inch drum spacers in the rear
Empi wide 5 disc kit rear
205 tyres

You STILL sometimes hit the plates on the inside or the body? How low are you running? Any pics of the car?
From what I can read the CB and Empi rear disc are zero offset if they come with the e-brake, non e-brake kits add an inch each side.
