Found this in the archives...

Scroll to your year.
Shows pics of a round mirror. But then another brochure shows the oblonged one. Note: one is a ghia. Guess you could go either way?

My 64 has a round mirror...but I've seen 'em with oblong too. Maybe they had both as options back then? |

x2, both are correct, depended on the dealer and what they wanted to put on the car. |

Beetles were shipped to the USA without exterior mirrors. VWoA and / or the local dealer sourced them from different manufactures and therefore there was 4-5 round mirors and 2-3 pear shaped mirrors. Any would be correct, use the one that you like. _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Woodstock, IL |

This is an interesting image (in keeping with discrepancies you can pick out in VW's advertising literature....) It's obviously supposed to be a pre-'65 (as evidenced by the wipers and sun visors), but that antenna mount was not used until the 1967 model. Likewise, while it's true either mirror is ok, all of the pre-'66 cars I have owned and most pre-'66s I've seen have had round mirrors - not the Hagus pear. On the other hand, both of my '67s sported the Hagus pear (as shown in the image below), and most of the other '67s I've seen have been pear shaped. Round mirrors "look" proper on earlier cars, whereas, pears look proper on '67 (to me anyway). However, I suppose nobody can fault you for putting a pear mirror on a '64. Now a pear mirror on an oval-window bug....

Hi, I'm trying to find a round mirror for my 1958 beetle that I purchased (it was owned by two little old ladies who put 23,000 miles on it and never left the town they bought it in in 49 years) and have been frustrated in finding one that you can actually adjust up and down so you are not looking at the road or the sky. I broke the one I got from a mailorder company trying to adjust. Does anyone know where I can get a quality round mirror? |

my bug had a pear shaped mirror, but the "101" arm, generally used only with round mirrors. I'm pretty sure it's the original setup though, because I have seen a few with the same mirror setup. (currently though i have 2 round mirrors) _________________ '58 Ragtop bug - 2276T (Re-assembly in progress!)

Thanks for the awesome detailed response!
I think I am going to go with the round mirror after all.
Only problem, I stripped the top nut!
Will have to get another.
Then again, the oval mirror doesn't have a "top nut"
Hmmmmmmmm . . . .
Thanks!

Need pics of the aftermarket ones you speak of. Do they mount on the hinge or elsewhere? The original style mirror (which I would say is the round 101 mirror) requires a hinge pin with a threaded receiver on top, to which the mirror is attached. I believe the hinge pin is the same for either mirror (round 101 or Hagus pear), though. _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

ALOT of people did this crap. They would drill holes and put them on. Dont use body filler to fill those holes. It will just fall through eventually. Weld them or braze shut. _________________ -OstKüste-

Back in the day, the cars did not come with mirrors from the factory.
They were installed by the dealer. And it depended on which part of the country you were in, and where the dealer got the mirrors from.
Different distributors might supply different mirrors. There were several sources of outside mirrors for VW's, that were distributed by VWoA. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey
