Well the worst of all aircooled nightmares happened to me today. My '69 went up in flames today. This month makes 20 yrs I've had this bus. What really gets me is the fact I had been putting a bunch of time/money into it so that it would once again be a good daily driver. I had just rebuilt the entire front end and had just had it aligned yesterday. And before anyone asked, YES I had new fuel lines-fuel clamps-fire extingusher. As a matter of fact we had to use 3 extingushers since the fuel was running out of the line (I had just filled the tank, something I usually never do).
Its still a bit hot in there but on first inspection it appears there is a crack on the backside of pump. I'll pull it apart tomorrow and do a real inspection. I was supposed to go this weekend and look at an entire drivetrain out of a '71 that I was gonna put in here, oh well.

I am thinking of trying one of these in my fuel system between the tank and the fuel pump. They are available in many different pressure ranges so I haven't figured out the pressure setting I want, probably around 2#. This will keep the fuel for draining out of the tank once you get a rupture.

Sorry about your loss. I also am on my 20th year of Bay ownership so I know the connection you feel for your bus.

That was the biggest problem with trying to stop the fire. We went thru 3 extingushers! You could just see the gas POURING out of the line onto the street and reigniting under the bus! I had a gasline pinchtool in my box but there was no way in hell I would have tried to get under tank to pinch it.

^^The passenger side headlight ring looks good, too.^^

Sorry to hear about your bus - that really sucks. Whether you decide to rebuild, or replace, you'll be back in the driver's seat eventually. And... doesn't half of the pleasure of owning a bus come from working on it yourself? Maybe not... just trying to be supportive!

Sorry to hear about your loss man. That really blows. I'd try to save it if it were me. I'd get some epoxy primer like PPG DP40 and sand down the outside and prime it to keep it from rusting. How's the interior? Looks like it was in the engine compartment mainly. I'd def.try to save it.It's been your friend for 20 yrs. You can't throw a friendship that old away.

Good luck,
Geno Very Happy

Yeah, just put the new drivetrain in it and call it a hoodride Smile

But seriously, its not too bad. Chop, cut, and rebuild.

I'm gonna cover it up and leave it be for right now. Eventually I'll fix it and put it back on the road. I'm gonna try and find a Bay singlecab and use it as a daily driver. The bus that burned up had been a good dependable bus, and I was putting time/money into it to make it the driver it once was. I bought it only 2 blocks from where I live now. My brother used it at college and painted it the color it is now. That paint job was shot so when I fix it up I'll probably rattle can it with some graffitti flames to color it up (and make lite of the situation).

All in all I can't complain too much. I've driven nothing but aircooled VW's for 22 yrs now and this is my first "bad" experience with them. After I got home yesterday and cleaned up, I hopped in my '67 Westy and went and got some Tuna steaks and steamed shrimp. Amazing how a full belly will get your mind off of things!

DAMNIT DAMNIT DAMNIT!!!!

I can believe this happening to someone else, but to Sloan? Never thought it would have happened. Sloan is such a good friend that he let me use this bus for a couple of years. I was its babysitter and caretaker! I can't remember it ever leaving me stranded or broke-down. I have known Sloan long enough that this bus IS like a part of the family. So sad to see.

Here are a few pics when I was rolling it. It was loaded with about 1,ooo lbs. of wood flooring in these pics, hence the lower ride height!
