It’s advice, donas you want, but I would sincerely consider sending the rears back and getting one of the sizes I mentioned. An 11% difference on the rear is significant. And on the asthetic side, will look kinda goofy. Good luck either way.

called tire shop, they were able to swap the rears out with 205/60R15.

thanks for the advice... I try and take it when given... but I'm quite impatient at times Wink

Hello, Really need some help. Installed 205/65/15 tires on my 15x8 smoothies. I fender literally sit on the tire so they wont work. I was running 195/55/15 but wanted a beefier looking tire and get closer to the 25 inch overall size for the gearing. What do you guys recommend as far as tire size? Fronts are 135/15

Looks badass Cool but something's gotta give. I say re-index torsions until you are happy with clearance & drive it! Very Happy

I've been looking through this topic since i've bought my '63, looking for some more info on what wheels and sizes i could fit.
After some wrenching i came up with this:

Front:
2,5" Dropped spindles
6" Narrowed adjustable beam (Volksprojects(Dutch)
Monroe Airshocks with 6mm airlines
6,5 x 15" Speedline 3 piece with 145/65r15 Nankang

Rear:
Lowered Adjustable Spring plates
Lowered 1 outer spline
5x130 '67-> Drums modified to fit short axles
9 x 15" Speedline 3 piece with 205/55r15 Nankang
A tiny bit of modeling the edge of the arches to prevent rubbing

Hey everybody,

I have a completely stock 1960, sitting stock height on 165 15's. Stock smoothies.

I have been out of the game!

Can I install 2.5 lowered spindles and be ok with the 165's?

If it will work, do I need to buy any other hardware to do the job?

I think you will be fine with stock wheels and that drop.

However you probably don't want to do the spindle swap yourself. I did it, but it was quite an undertaking. You need a shop press and a reamer tool and will have to re-bush the link pin carrier. So new pins and bushings.

I added disc brakes which makes the front end 5/8" wider and I hope I still have room, but 2.5" isn't really slammed.

To each their own, I guess. Many different routes to take.
Personally I totally dislike narrowed beams, small radial tires, widened deep dish rear wheels and slammed stance. Most all look broken to me and compromised in ride quality. Not hating on all of those you guys, just saying. I am on the other side.

4.50 Firestone and 6.50 Goodrich on 3.50-16 Barndoor bus wheels. dropped spindles. about 3/4 click in the rear. Rides perfectly smooth with added tall highway gearing with factory 4.375 and 1200.

1963 Beetle
3.5" beam and drop spindles
4" rear drop plates, limebug shocks

4.5 fuchs with 125s
6 fuchs with 215/70s (likely to go to a smaller tire as they do rub on big dips)

Love the wide whites. I like really low cars but not the rubber band tires or camber.

I am back from my weekend trip to Bavaria and the tall 16" highway gearing is amazing.....
The engine is a mid 1970s D factory 'Austausch', setup with old fan housing and stale air heaters. but contemporary 30 Solex and 1970s type distributor. engine is a bit tired but very reliable.
On country roads I was driving in the 70-100km/h range (ca. 45 to 60 mph).
I got 6.64 liters per 100 km, that's approx 35mpg. Shocked
Odometer and speedo readings are correct.

Greetings, I know this post requires pictures and descriptions on wheels, etc., but I have a basic question. I have a 65 VW bug with 67 transaxles (1 1/2" longer) . I am having custom Chromies made, so how deep can I go without the tires rubbing on the fenders. Additionally, how deep can I go in the front as well. Btw, the car is not lowered yet. Thank you!

195 is a wide tire for the front, that wouldt look good Very Happy
i would take 165 max, even 145 is possible...
195 will touch the inner fenders...

I just bought spindels and some 5.5 rims.
The tires i gonne buy are:
front: 145/65
rear:165/80

Gday Wily, do you have any photos of your setup?

we just bought a stock 61 and was thinking of 2 1/2 inch spindles and same wheels, what tyre size worked for you? dont really want to start cutting beam for adjusters or getting a narrowed beam if we dont have too..

thanks.
