That picture was taken from the front of the fleet so it's difficult to tell Smile What regatta was that? What year?

Great photos E and D

J boats are awesome. I sailed a little bit on a J29 out of Harbor (or Shelter) Island. Did the beer can race out to the 1SD. More of a drunken brawl than a race but it was fun. Hmmm, that would have been 1986.

2007 Melges 24 European Championships, Neustadt/Holstein, Germany, 4th annual Rolex Baltic Week. Flavio Flavini, SUI, won. 74 boats in all.

Does that look like fun or what?

I used to sail a butterfly as a kid...bought a couple hobie 16's last year and have been slowly restoring the hulls...I think i'll be up and sailing again before summers end...my friend sand I have no clue how to sail a cat, though...should be interesting...the jib kind of scares me as well...think I'll get myself a book...

I figured I wasn't the only sailor in the bunch. I grew up racing sailboats with my family - My great-uncle had a Dragon up in Seattle, we had a Lido 14 and a Laser, and club raced all over the place. Crewed for a lot of folks in dinghy's and big boats through the years, and raced collegiately pretty extensively here in the Pacific Northwest. My favorite boats to race were J-35 and an old 8 Meter (48'), and I was one of the few gals up on foredeck, which was a blast. I pretty much quit when I had kids, and miss it alot.

I was thinking of pulling a Lido around behind my Bus, but then I bought my Victory sloop, 1350 lbs, forget that!

Another Dragon Sailor....you are hard core! You got to get back into it Emily's Owner!

You gonna sail up at Horsetooth?

Sailing a Hobie is just like sailing anything else, only advice I would give you is to not cleat the main off until you are very comfortable sailing it. You can almost always dump the main to keep it from going over.

Also watch the leeward hull when the wind is high, when the bow starts to go underwater you know you are in for the ride of your life (read: pitchpole)

If your rudders aren't tuned perfectly when you get some speed up they will hum (I think it is resonance between the rudders when you are cruising). It's actually pretty cool.

Heaviest sailor is the skipper, lightest sailor is crew. Weight distribution is critical.

Don't bother going out in heavy winds if you don't have a trapeze

When you tack, back wind the jib. Hobies can't point for shit, backwinding the head sail will speed up your tacks.

have fun, they are a kick in the pants. Best with some waves and a beach. Nothing like surfing in.
