I hate to pass the buck on this, but you might want to direct this question to the 1500 club. I only say that, as the tab you're talking about is actually a combination of the inner door skin and outer door skin being spot welded together to form a "u" shaped part. I have no idea on the depth of it, as I'd never see a pre-65 door set up under the wing window. I was just going off later models that I commonly work on. Maybe Jason (Notchboy) or Jack (IBJack) or Pedro can help you out with either photos or some measurements. |
This probably the wrong thread for this topic.
But, I can probably help. Mine is an early '63 and I have all of it apart.
The vent wing is different to later ones, but only slightly. The rubber does mount to the wing. But there is a difference on the doors regarding the depth of the tabs connecting inner and outer parts of the door. I can take pictures and measurements later today. |
I have no problem with questions being asked in this thread, even if it's not related to my old car.
Michael, if you want to post pics and dimensions, go right ahead. It wouldn't be the first time this thread has gotten off track. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

On a 1961 VW sedan such as mine, the rubber mounts to the door, not to the wing window unfortunately I'm told. So if i mount the rubber in the door, there's nothing for it to rest on as the previous owner cut it out to make room for the one peace window to travel thru. I think it might look like a flat channel that just supports the wing window rubber and have a hole in it for the wing window pivit post at the bottom of the window to pass thru. How can you show me or tell me what it looks like so i can fabricate a new peace of metal and installl it? |
Wendell owns a 61 VW sedan, so I'm wondering if the Type 1 & 3 wing windows are the same?
It sounds like his vent windows don't have metal frames?
Seems like he needs a good used set of doors if he wants stock windows in his bug again. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Years ago I had a '72 Squareback I tried to migrate to FI. Ultimately, we were able to determine that the ECU was faulty, and even then, it was not cost effective to do anything about that.
Well, I just finished going through the thread, and what a huge amount of seriously inspiring work. I keep getting more and more excited about the efforts I'm about to be able to make on mine! |
The guy I sold it to ended up going with a set of Weber 34ICTs, so he could drive it as the FI kept giving him trouble. I had re-installed the FI back on it, and it ran really good before I sold the car. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks. I did that car to help others, and show that no matter how rusty a car is, it can be fixed. |
That car wasn't rusty... it was gone. You built that sumbitch out of air! |
Yeah, you could say that. Neil basically donated a Squareback to rebuild it (and clean up his yard), and I used all that he had given me, along with some stuff from Russ and Martin (before the DDB closed), not to mention the pile of parts out back that I had. It still looks as good today (although a little dirtier) than it did 5 years ago.
Sorry to hear about your relatives Tram. That has to suck. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Bob when can I fly you in to go down to Trams and kick his ass, take the T34 and have you put a top on it |
I'd love to say send me a plane ticket, but I'm currently in the middle of a Pontiac Trans Am Pacecar restoration (it's on the rotissery) at the moment. I've got parts for that car scattered all over the property and even in my friends garage, as I don't have the space here. Not to mention, I've got 3 other projects waiting for me to get to. In other words I'm busier than shite with work (all paying too).
I'd really like to help you out, but I guess what YOU need to do, is go and hand Tram a PILE of CASH to get him off his butt, and get working on your car. Sometimes that's all it takes. |
Alright you fucktards... mention my name five times and it's like "Candyman" up in this bitch.
Sure, I'd love cash... but what I really need is 5 or 10 Pedros to get over here and do my Gotsdamn work for me.
After a major surgery every year during the 2010-2015 period I just got in the clear and feeling like my own self when the relatives started getting sick and taking the big vacation. Annette's mom's cancer came back and we had her here in hospice beginning in Feb, then my dad's multiple myeloma got really aggressive mid May so I flew back to Ohio for two weeks. Then back here on the second of June with hospice, and my dad passed on the 10th so back there. Then back here, and Annette's mom finally passed on July 31. My cousin Peter had a heart attack and died at 64 August 2. My wife's Uncle Mike died last week.
On top of that, I was the point man and the "keeper of the secrets" for both estates. The mother in law's was easy because I was the one who basically set everything up, but we are still turning up assets and investments from my dad the banker... aka "the Squirrel" at this point because he sorta buried stuff everywhere. At least my mom isn't in any danger financially but that's not much consolation to her, unfortunately.
We're exhausted. I now need to go back to Ohio to help my poor mother out who is 79 and alone for the very first time in her life, probably early December. My younger brother is there and really taking charge of things but he can only do so much.
Excuses, excuses.
Sure, I'd love to take a big wad of cash off bayboy's hands but I'm afraid to. It'll get done, I'm not going all Kiefernet on your ass yet.... Save your pennies Boi...
