Is yours rusty bad? If not might be better to fix it. Will be hard to find a early hood like that in good shape. Find a good body shop that can weld up the crack and reinforce that area. Wink

Agreed. "New" ones don't exist. Reproductions are junky.

I agree, keep it German. It will be well worth the expense in the long run for a good bodyman, than to deal with any aftermarket junk.

I was looking for a new hood for my '61 'vert because mine was split out too. but everyone that i could find needs the same repair or rust repair or something else...... Mine still fits nice, so I'm just going to repair it and reinforce it. it's actualyy one of the nicest fitting hoods I've had......... Keep all the original metal you can!

If your '61 was built in '60, it originally had the 4-tab VW emblem on the hood. If it was built in '61, it had the early 3-pin emblem, only used with the Wolfsburg crest.

FYI, it was at chassis number 3551045 when the change to the 3-pin hood happened.

Um so 1958 not 1960... always wondered why my 61 had only 3 tabs. Cool

on my 61 i have the same issue with the crack on the side near the nose! would this cause the hood to sag as well, or is that from the PO trying to close it with the latch engaged, If i welded it up would that prevent the sag?

Um that VIN is the first car built in the calendar year 1961, not 1958.
I think you may have gotten mixed up with Bus VINs. Wink

You mean the famous lower-on-the-passenger side sag? That's from the trying to close it with the hood prop latched, as you suspect. Welding the tear won't fix that sag. Sad
(Trust me, I wish that was the fix, too)

Are you saying October 1960 was the last of the four tab emblem mounting arrangement? I thought P/R listed that change as Jan 2, 1961...?

My 58 has the same issue. Not only does it have the common "crease" on the edge but it has dings from items protruding up thru the trunk Mad The hood is the OG one, so I would rather pay the extra expense of fixing it then to by a repo.
