My Westie is now sitting in Pecos, TX waiting for a motor. But before it gave it up, it made a 4,000-plus mile trip down to the Pacific coast below Guadalajara.

What an awesome pic. That looks like a place my wife and I went to, just south of Puerto Vallarta. It was an abondoned resort with a fantastically secluded beach. I dreamt of having my bus parked right where yours is. |

aquanaut,
You know EXACTLY where I was at. That is so wild that you know this isolated spot. It is between P.V. and Manzanillo, near a little town called La Manzanilla. There is also an incredible coral reef near there that is awesome for snorkling.
The first time I went down there was about 3 years ago, in the dead of winter. I went with three buddies. The weather was so great, that we didn't even pitch a tent. We just slept right on the beach. We cooked over a fire, and drank beer and swam all day.
As soon as I got my most recent Westie, I knew it would see that beach. I would like to go again in the winter. Winter is the best time to go.
If anyone wants to go to an isolated beach on the Pacific, that is an awesome spot.

Taylor L, hope you have great luck with your new powering. I ran around naked at that exact spot. It is for sale. There is a small landing strip at the spot and a skeleton of a resort. How cool that you were able to take your camper there. It must have been fantastic. We took a rental car, we drove from P.V. to Guadalara, then to Melaque. Melaque is a fantastic vacation spot that has cheap food, beverages, and hotels. And, a cool center of town that everyone visits in the evenings. I think that we were there over a weekend. So awesome. I posted a picture of the abandoned resort in the gallery for vanagons, cant seem to get it to show here. |

aqua,
They bull-dozed the airport. Colombians were using it as their personal little strip to fly in cocaine.
The story I heard on the resort:
It was a spot where many movie stars from the states would go and vacation many years ago, thus the air stip. It was isolated, and they could have privacy. You can look at the place and tell that it was really fancy at some point, I nice fountain in the couryard, a pool.
The owner decided he wanted to expand the resort. He borrowed money from the Mexican government, I think about a half a million bucks. A friend talked him into going to Vegas, convincing him that he could double his money, pay off the goevernment, and have his resort paid for.
He lost it all. The government now owns the resort.
When I went up there about 3 years ago, they had a military patrol assigned to watch the resort. There were 3 soldiers that lived there on the site, and guarded it. They were super nice guys, and let us wander around the place and look around.
This time, the soldiers were gone. The place was worse off for it. People had gone in and torn the place up to harvest pipes and electrical wires etc.

Wow! Nice spot. I've found many a secluded beach for camping along the Baja but I've not yet ventured onto the mainland. Gotta add it to my list. _________________ 83 1/2 Westy waterboxer

It's a great spot. There is also a coral reef not far from it; awesome snorkeling. Just a short walk up the beach there is a lagoon full of Crocodiles, and I mean monster crocs.

January is THE perfect time of year to be down there. I have some maps of the area. When I get my van, hopefully this weekend, I will scan them and send them to you.

We'll be down there this January too! I've already started counting down the days. Six months to see how far south we can get.

Depends on what you want, but the third edition of the Church & Church "Mexican Camping" book with its online updates is a good place to start. Buy it at Amazon or www.rollinghomes.com/might be rollinghome.com. Balnearios can be good camping places on the interior. Camp sites are like recommending books, music and restaurants - all in the eyes of the beholder. |
