June 1963. How the heck did they deliver it 2.5 years before it was built?

Good job. Based on the VIN, that notch was built in 1963 and when it was delivered. But according to the advertiser, it was in existence as early as 1961 (or two and a half years before it was built!)

Instead of an asterisk (*), it has " - " preceding the VIN

I can't tell, but are those tail lights from another car? They almost look like late big tail lights, but scaled down. The pic is kinda weird.

The tail lights reminded me of a MGB's tail lights. The whole car was weird...

Yeah, you are right. The tail lights are from another car. Confused

Check the interior too. The seats are definitely not the original. Wink

Yeah, so 80's look. Shaved moldings, loud color, custom seats and sidings, tint, non-vee-dub tail lights. What else can I say?

Hello from Germany,

we all know that there are a lot of weird stories around. But remember that we are the specialists, knowing about VINs and production dates, not some 5th or 6th owner who wants to sell his used car.

If we had an old BMW or Mercedes, and were told by some previous owner that it was imported in 1966 (for example), we would also put that in our ebay ad because there is no reason to doubt it (for us non BMW specialists).

Of course there were prototypes ready in January 1961, and VW was definitely still working and testing on the EA 97, but there is no way that a type 3 as we know it today left the factory that early for private use...

At the IAA 1961 they had a few type 3 ready for journalists to take a test ride around Frankfurt. I can imagine that VIN 0000010 and 0000054 are some of those cars that got away. Usually a "zero-series" was produced for that reason.

By the way (I am much more into the T34 research than the T3) I have papers from March 1961 when Dr. Arnold from Karmann inspected their first prototype ("Musterwagen Nr. 1 Typ LYON") with a mileage of 47.000 km (in March 1961!) to find out what to improve. At that time the chassis was separated from the body, and the papers say at the end "Ein weiterer Bericht wird erstellt, sobald die Karosse demontiert ist" (an additional report will be filed when the body is dismantled).

Thanks for reading,

Regards

Jörg

Sorry I don't live on the samba. Some people have lives away from there computer. Try it sometime. There is a whole world outside of the internet.

I will try to get the vin this week. I'm curious to see what people say. My friend bought the car about 10 years ago. He posted it back then and some people thought it was an actual 61.

Well, a '61 it is not! Read up and you will see the VIN. I'm a little confused, and I don't believe you introduced yourself correctly, is this your car or are you selling it for somebody else?

Just a little friendly advice, if you sell something, whether it be on ebay, or anywhere else, you should verify your VIN with the (year) as you are advertising it, that way you don't mislead anyone. You wouldn't want anyone to report you for falsifying your add, I mean you wouldn't have any integrity on ebay, so be honest, that's a whole world in itself...Try it sometime.

Hold on there Dave, I think Brentadour is just the guy who said his buddy has a '61 on the previous page, not the guy in Bolivia with the eBay ad.

And Brentadour, I think Russ meant he asked the eBay guy for his car's VIN, not you.

Everyone just take a deep breath...

Sorry........I get excited whenever 61/62 Type 3 cars/parts pop up, I love the real early stuff and that's an understatement! and I really dont' like it when people say they have early stuff and it turns out not to be, let's just say I've been burned on parts before!

That is a good point Dave. Anyone should advertise correctly and accurately. One should be vigilant too on dealing with some advertised products on the internet, on ebay or otherwise. However, there are cyber laws so to speak that the buyers are protected. These are the recent developments in the cyber world.

Because on the internet, the globe became very small (not in the real sence), and one can interact with another person even if he is half way around the globe.

Every advertisement who post on the internet carries with it full resposibility becasue once the same is posted, everyonce can have access to it.

The advertised of the Notch may not be knowledgeable on Type 3's, but then again, he should have made a thorough research on that Notch before any information thereto has been posted.
