With grey backs? All the chrome caps I have seen, including other NOS ones that had stickers or boxes, were all 100% chromed.

These Hubcaps weigh 22oz each, aftermarket ones weigh 16oz. They are painted on the Inside at the factory. They do not come in the original VW Box. |
My originals weigh 19 oz. I have a couple aftermarkets - they are 13 oz.
Any other opinions?
How to identify original caps
Original caps usually have the following features:
1. Raised tabs along the outer edge:
2. Some but not all original caps have a small production marking on the outer edge.
3. Weight - Original caps weigh approx 6 oz. more than most reproductions. It is easy to tell by holding it, if you have 2 side by side or become familiar with the weight.
Original (Approx. 18 oz.)
Repro (Approx. 13 oz)
More weights reported later in this thread

They don't look like cheap repros to me. However, I agree that the lack of chrome on the backside is suspicious. The thing that points out "originality" of actually being a VW part is the little raised "square nubs" on the outer edge where they would touch the rim. I've never seen a repro that had those on it before. As far as I've always heard, those signify an original VW cap. Anybody have any other information possibly? Another market spec possibly? I doubt Brazilian as their stuff was of lesser quality than German. _________________ Please check us out on Instagram at @holygrailgarage

I bought a set of the ones from the link you posted. They are superb. Granted, they are painted grey on the back, which seemed a little odd, but they have the three rectangular protrusions on the rim and the logo has a crisp edge. The chrome is deep and lustrous with no flaws. They weigh 20 1/2 ounces each (likely because of the grey coating on the backside). If they are not german, they are THE nicest hubcaps I have seen.
After the set arrived and I had a chance to thoroughly inspect each one, I bought another set. They are truly nice!!!
BTW, when you scratch off a little of the grey coating, they are chrome underneath.
Here is one of the square protrusions I was referring to from one of my originals. I was sure to ask about them and the ad shows a photo, as well.

Yes, the price is strong. However, I paid less than $80 each based on my winning bids on the auction. Plus, each set comes with quality steel rivets and clips. If you really want what your VW came with, you have to step up and pay for the quality. there arent many around like these unless you have your originals rechromed. It took a LOT of personal debate about these, but after getting two sets, I have no regrets. They are much nicer than the el cheapo alternatives. I plan to have my cars long-term and I want them to be correct. _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

I was very tempted to buy a set of these myself as I need a set for a new project. I couldn't pull the trigger as I was thinking they were not the real deal. Quite expensive as well.
Anyone have a nice used set they would like to sell ? |

It sounds like they are not NOS but just new, high quality caps. |
If that is the case I'd suspect that the chrome most definitely won't last like the original chrome did. It seems that nothing is made as well as stuff was made back in the day. _________________ Please check us out on Instagram at @holygrailgarage

Is it just me, or does 67 Florida Deluxe seem a wee bit irrationally exuberant about these? _________________ -Thom

I know CIP1 is selling new German hubcaps, I'll bet these are the same ones, they aren't NOS but are OEM made with the same dies.

Much heavier and better chrome than the other repros.. _________________ Wanted: Old Martin or Gibson Guitars |

Because it doesn't say NOS on their website:
http://www.oeveedub.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PR...gory_Code=
I know the clips and rivets are not NOS but they say they are NOS in the eBay auction too.
They are possibly not brand new(?) but I don't think they are NOS, meaning they are not from the 1960s/1970s.
My opinion, of course. |
I agree, that seems like some sleezy eBay tactics if you ask me. Never once have I seen an NOS cap with a painted inside. |

All the NOS caps I've seen are always grey on the back?
I had a set of those caps from wolfsburg two years ago and a set this year too.
They sell them at the classicparts.de and they are made by the og company who always made them back in the day.
A guy at the factory told me to go there and sure enough I get the same story from the guy on the counter.
He said they are only the real ones if the are grey on the back. |

I have original hubcaps although I have no idea if they came with my car, and they are painted gray on the back. So is the consensus that they didn't come that way from the factory? |
