I had a weird feeling that something wasn't quite right with my KTM, so I split off from the fleet of 3 buses that were going to hammer Bartlet Springs. Sure as shit, not 10 minutes later, my battery was smoking. I thought it was the hot exhaust heating it up, so I pulled over to let it cool...took off about a half hour later, south 29, seemed fine.

Rolled into Middletown, and my ass was on fire! Popped the seat, grabbed the battery, and my fingerprints sunk into the melting plastic. Shit was smoking! I immediately put my gloves back on, disconnected it, and put it in the middle of the street and watched it catch fire. I've seen batteries blow up before. Not cool! I was a little worried. So was the crowd that gathered to watch.

More story over the campfire.

Home safe now thanks to JohnnyO. It's not the first time that he's saved my ass...won't be the last. Special thanks to Spanky for activating Emergency Broadcast System.

JohnnyO and Skinner deserve BIG props for getting the Tar off of the side of that mountain. Above and beyond rescue program! It was a highlight for me to see Skinner in teaching mode with the Tar Crew. I'll wax poetic about it sometime.

Hull Mtn. was super fun! Great to see everyone. Friends are family that you choose, and I sure do feel the familial love from all of you crazies.

BTW, I scored some of the best bus footage that I've ever gotten! Think: 2' deep mud pit + buses.

Here's what I would like to see from you dudes, and I'm sure it would be valuable for other Shasta n00bs. Write up all the shit that you learned about venturing off the beaten path in VW Buses. You guys pulled off the repair(s) with your own two hands with instruction from Skinner and JO. You drove hard. From my perspective, you had a pretty epic Shasta primer. What were your impressions?

Heavy drama from all you cats! Wow!

Nathalie, Tommy and myself rolled out for a ride Sunday afternoon that ended up being the epic 4-hour moto-adventure for myself, Nathalie and her son, and we were all stoked to see Bald Eagles from the precipice of Hull Mountain, a good hill climb that they persevered with. The Bald Eagles were the first ones I've ever seen in California, and they were completely obvious -two of them- flying the thermals right out in front of the mountain top, both with bright white tail plumage. They didn't stick around though, and rode the ridge line west, eventually out of sight.

The ride wasn't supposed to be such a long event, but required a lot of 11yr old drama and challenges for mom and myself, as I insisted that we ride down one of the "black diamond" trails from the top of the mountain... bad idea Rolling Eyes In the end, everybody had learned a LOT... we'll just chalk it up to character building Wink The upper sections of these trails were heavily rutted and very steep. Nathalie handled it well enough, but little Tommy shit his pant about ten times, total fiasco. I promised (and came through) with riding their bikes down all the hard hills and sections... I got my running-back-up-the steep-ass-hill workout for damn sure! By the time we finally rolled into camp, Tommy was 10 times the mini-rider he was in the morning.

Kind of sad, but our ride was so long, when we got back, every single person in the entire campground had left -nary a soul. I wasn't able to say goodby to my insane VW friends and the camp felt totally lonely. An idea of how much time must have passed since the last camper had left, when we finally rolled in, over 50 head of elk had taken over and were grazing the oak acorns all around the fire pit -directly where the campout had taken place. As we rounded the bend into camp they all scattered, some jumping the fences, some trotting out the opening on the lakeside of camp, it was quite the scene.

We unwound from our ride, moved our camp directly next to the fire pit and tuned in the World Series while preparing hotdogs to barbeque over a huge campfire. With sketchy reception, we remained baited for all of the plays and really had a great time, full moon rising huge and bright, illuminating our own -now private- Oak Flat Campground World Series.

We packed this morning, did some M/C maintenance and set off for a last fun family ride before lashing the bikes to the trailer and slowly rolling out of The Mendocino National Forest.

Hull Of A Campout 2012... CHECK!
