Great thread guys. I purchased this guy at a recent towing impound auction. It has Westfalia data plate and Westy interior. It obviously has a Safare' bubble top. It is a 69. My question is, did Safare do the conversions in 69? I am wondering if it originally a tin top then years down the road someone installed the Safare top on it. This is my first bus and I am amazed how smooth this thing drives. Any info would be great as I am trying to piece the history of this little guy together. Oh by the way, I am installing the rear wheel well sheet metal back on it as we speak. _________________ ASE Master Tech 2002

bartman360- That's not a Safare hitop. Maybe Adventurewagon. Review other tops in this thread. Note slanted hitop window, a feature specific to Safare Custom Campers. _________________ WTB swivel table hdwr.

Thx buscuss for the info, but now i am even more confused. Adventurewagon? I read through all 5 pages before posting, I never even noticed the window being straight instead of slanted. The other distinct item is the upper sliding bed. It is a tri-fold like the Safare but it is in the front instead of the rear. Anyone else got any info on this top? Would Westfalia have installed this top at thier factory?

I agree with buscuss about the window, but I don't think it's an Adventurewagen as those typically had the dropped down cargo area in the rear of the high top. My guess is that it's a one-off custom job. Looks pretty cool - you should bring it to Camano in June! _________________ Paul

bartman- Go to <http://www.type2.com/m-codes/> and read all.
Collect your m-codes from the plate behind the driver's seat, or, on top of the driver's side fresh air duct.
pm <daves ale> your m-codes and request an interpretation. He has helped others often. Then, you will know how your bus was shipped, ie, with what equipment. Likely, your hitop is aftermarket & done in the US. I don't believe Westfalia produced them, just poptops. _________________ WTB swivel table hdwr.

Thanks guys for the info. So I decoded the m code. It was factory prepared for campmobile interior and also was prepared with an opening in the roof with reinforcement for Westfalia pop-up roof. So this possibly tells me that someone removed the pop-top and installed the bubble top. The info provided also told me that the campmobile was picked by the original owner at the factory in Germany. Wouldn't that be the shit to go pick up your bus brand new at the factory and ferry it home after touring the country for a month or two in 1969? I guess I will just have to be happy with that info and hope that someday, someone, somewhere, can positively ID that top. Again, thanks fellas and if anyone else thinks they have any info on the top please chime in. Also some rear wheel well repair in action and some other interior shots.

picked up a '71 Safare' on Sunday night. My bus is named "Bob with one 'O'" after my Grandpa, and the Safare' was named Robert. Same year, same original color, same deluxe trim... it was a match I couldn't say no to.
Details:
Interior is gutted but the body is in decent shape (despite a shoddy roll-on paint job and silver-painted chrome everywhere) and the engine is damn near perfect. I won't be holding onto this one for long, as its a gift for a good friend, but I sure would love to be able to track down some interior pieces (especially the upper or lower beds) before I pass it on. reply or PM me if you might have any leads, please!
Side note:
One of the most hilarious things was discovering AFTER the purchase that the two front seats were computer chairs with the legs hacked-off, bunjee-corded in place . Ken at TheBusCo was good enough to set me up with a pair of seats out of a '76 (high-backs) for a song, so that's taken care of now (thanks, Ken!)
Lesson learned:
Don't buy a bus if the only time the owner can meet you is after dark. Inspecting a vehicle with only a flashlight is not optimal. (still loving it, though!)

Hey guys
Here's Rosie. A 1977 Type 2 Safare Conversion.
Originally from Texas but been over here for the last 20 years apprently. I bought her last year and refurbished the interior over the last winter. Tried to keep to the original style and colouring, let me know what you think.
Never seen another one like it over here, even at the shows.
Thought i'd also say hello to Silent Running, long time no speak. Hope your well fella.
Anyway take a look at my gallery.
All the best

Hey Steve! She's looking good! What did you use to fabricate and line the back seat base? Also, did you have the cushions reupholstered? _________________ Paul

Hey guys
Thanks for the comments. Still got some bits to do but think i might leave it now until over winter.
I've fabricated all cabinets out of MDF and covered with a wood effect veneer. I would have loved to remake all cabinets in real dark oak timber but alas the funds never quite stretched that far.
I have kept all the upholstery as original. The condition is pretty good so the phrase 'if it ain't then don't try to fix it' came to mind.
Going to VDUB at the Pub this weekend in Dorset and then VW Action at Santa Pod Raceway next weekend (look them up on the web).
All the best fellas

Damn that's an ugly badge! I bet you can get an online company to replicate
That pretty easy,as long as you can get some good photos. _________________ 78 hightop 2.0 FI

rico,
the back piece, where the table attaches too when upright, has two lock latches that allow this piece to be free. The very back level part then swings up and over and ultimately on top of the table, when in the down position. There is void space underneath the very back level piece and the latched piece...kind of like a small trunk. _________________ 1974 Safare' Custom Camper

Hey everyone, what an awesome thread. Here's my 72 Safare I bought about a month ago:
I am 100% a mechanical newbie so (besides cleaning, new seatbelts and an oil change) so far I've been taking it in to a pro to get issues fixed. However I am reading lots and trying to absorb, I've got the Muir and Bentley books so I think I'm off to a good start.
My first Safare-related question is: Does anyone know where I can get replacement plastic trim for the cabinets? It's different from the westy trim and that's the only trim I can find info about on here by searching. Anything I replace because it's yucky I want to replace with something exactly like the original if possible, as long as it's safe and functional.
My second Safare-related question is: How the heck do you pronounce Safare? Is is suh-fahr-ay? Or suh-fahr-ee?
P.S. Bluto and Jovalij, I've been salivating over your photos. |
