aeromech,
It’s too bad the Deluxe Trim got removed and that the color was changed I think the original color looked better- but it’s not my bus ;0) it seems that the green paint should shine a bit more, looks flat, are you going to buff it out? Also I think it would have been better to keep the T4 in it, as they are almost bullet proof compared to pushing that high top with a T1 engine; you must be a good mechanic to use a 32/36 on a T1 I hear they are a bear to tune well on any motor, did you use a A/F meter to tune it?
Just curious about the conversion and how it will work out :0) _________________ Current VWs 71 T2 Westy SO-72/6(Miami), 71 Crew Cab, 2015 GSW TDI

Reply to the above: The deluxe trim will be installed this week. The color was chosen by the owner because he loves green buses. The picture was taken after the bus has been sitting around for a month being worked on and needs to be washed so that might explain why it's a bit dull (I hope). The power brakes work just like in a 1971 bus. There has been a fitting tapped into the intake manifold to run the vacuum off. T4 engines might be great for some but I hate them. I owned a 1971 deluxe 7 passenger bus for 26 years. During that time I had an engine installed that was very similar to this new engine. Same approximate displacement, same cam (Engle 110), and same progressive carb. The engine pushed my 1971 over the Grape Vine with very little trouble. I'm assuming that this bus will perform pretty much the same. The original T4 was 1700cc and now it's around 1900+ (90.5 X 76 crank). Actually the progressive carb runs pretty darn good for me right out of the box. I still haven't adjusted it because I've been doing other things. If anything I may need larger jets and small adjustments. That will come next week. |

aeromech- Good looking job on the '72 Safare resto and thanks for posting the photo history.
Anyone know when Safare Custom Campers began business, and when they closed or were sold? _________________ WTB swivel table hdwr.

I've been working on this project since July 3, 2008. I do VW work on the side from my home in San Diego and advertise on Craigslist. The owner of the bus called me from Florida and told me he had bought this bus for $1400 on eBay in El Cajon and wanted me to get the bus running so he could fly out and drive her home to Florida. Well, one thing led to another and we are now doing almost a full restoration. Here's some pics of the bus when I got it.

Great work but are you sure this one is a Safare? Got any interior pics?
Seems like every Safare is 73+ kombi based whereas all Contempos seem to be 72 deluxes.
Just an observation. _________________ Show your love for the Land of Kong:

It looks like one of those Bungled Buses with a Heinous Hitop made by Calamitous Campers in Asshat, Arkansas. _________________ WTB swivel table hdwr.

daylan- Just saw your other post and that is definitely a Safare interior.
I really like the upholstery fabric. Nice.
Someone said your poptop is a Riviera. Mine is similar.
Welcome to the club. Roll it! _________________ WTB swivel table hdwr.

I'am sorry to tell you this but if you look just above and behind the right wheel opening you will see the Safare' manufacturers plaque _________________ Thanks,
