Thanks learned a lot from this thread. Mine is only an electric bike but it is heavy and bulky. Got some ideas from here and like the ramp. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

I have a Joe Hauler, works great with the Zuma, the cam lock hitch design is very clever.

To the OP i have a 97 EVC as well, i took my Zuma to Laguna Seca for the American LeMans Series, fun to have the scooter to trip around on. _________________ 1997 VW Eurovan Camper Winnebago...aka "Bibendum"

I carry my 86 CT 110 on a Harbor Freight hitch carrier. Works great, though a little floaty in the front...it is perfect for hanging out at the campground when you need to go get some wood...or beer or you know more...beer

I'd do this, but my scooter is worth more than my vanagon!

Two detailed threads on his regular duty hitch... to give you an idea.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=458405&highlight=burley+hitch
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=439045&highlight=burley+hitch
I have loaded my regular duty one to 350 lbs and it begins to show a wee bit of flex.. around 250-300lbs or so.
But its not going anywhere. Welds are bomb proof.. and the 6 bolt attachment to Vanagon subframe won't fail until the whole van tears apart.
Burley's heavy duty hitch was built while I was installing the regular duty version (one of his first for the f/g bumprs).
He uses heavier guage tubing, and reinforces. If you have particular questions about the hitch, email Burley directly.
I may upgrade to the heavy duty version in the future.
Second to the hitch..your biggest challenge in carrying bigger bikes off the rear is your rear suspension. The stock springs are too soft for it. Lots has been written on the subject. Do a search... and feel free to PM me on mine. I've made minor mods to rear suspension to facilitate tongue weights to 300ish lbs. And I occasionally go to 350lbs around town. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

WE built a custom bumper class 3 hitch, so it can take the weight of a motorbike. My Puch made by the people who made the Syncro. Then got the motorcycle carrier off of Ebay $100.00 works great! Holds up to 600 lbs. At least that is what the manufacture says. My Syncro with heavy springs takes it just fine . _________________ 1987 syncro westy tin top sun roof , GW2.3, rear locker, decoupler, Gary Lee tire rack & winch mount, lift, south african grill, big brakes , rhein alloy ,15 BFG AT, Fiamma 10 foot awning ,140 watt rear 85 watt front solar , mppt, truckfridge, automatic fire extinguishing system, tencent oil cooler, And a RMW SS exhaust! - 1971 bug convertible 1776 engine- 2010 Subaru turbo - 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck - 1999 Harley 95 CI, big bore, Andrews cams . A little late for this thread, but for a single motorcycle, I use a Moto Jack-Rack with a hydraulic bottle jack built in for lifting with parallel arms. They are out of business but another guy is making almost the very same thing called "The Ultimate MX-Hauler"
The bike rests on it's skid plate with hooks through the foot pegs. Also has a Gas Can holder.
Doubles as a great Cycle Work Platform Lift

I didn't see it anywhere in the thread but most of these carriers drastically reduce the visibility of your taillights!!! Great way to get rear ended at night, etc.
Simple enough to add lights to the rack and plug them into the trailer plug, but most people don't do it. |

Or add a third brake light at the least. _________________ ---------------------------------------------------

Turn signals too.
I have a hitch platform and I added trailer lights to it since my load would sometimes block my rear lights.... _________________ Dave O
