does anyone know anything about the elusive rear tent? how does the wood part join to the bus? there are metal hooks but is there supposed to be some sort of hook on the bus?

never heard of one, but thought of making one. My sister is a seamstress, and i wanted one that would hang from the rear hatch with snaps, 3-sided, open to the inside. You could crawl from the bus out into it, use it for a WC, or shower? (with optional curtain to protect the inside). Use a solar water bag, gravity fed for the shower h20.
editing to add: you could work on the engine in the rain also. . .
just an idea. Do you know of any photos of a rear tent?

Pretty sweet. If anyone has one, definitely post pics & measurements. I'd love to (get my girlfriend to) make one. How about that side step? I've been thinking about making one...any chance they can be found, or are they as elusive as the rear tent? |

Just bought a sidestep from a neighbor for $20.00. It didn't look right on his 65, looks fine on my 71. |

i have that rear tent....its very kewl. it is quite complicated, a lot of snaps etc but it really seals to the bus. there is a clear panel that covers the rear hatch window so its like a skylight.

Or you can go with one of these. Similar design.

True but what do you think an original rear ender tent in good condition is going to cost? As rare as they are I would guess quite a bit more than $350. Look at how much the side tents are selling for. $500-$1000 is the norm. _________________ Jasan C.

Good point. My problem is, how's this cost any more than a plain old camping tent? All that's different is that it fits next to the bus...
I'm thinking of just getting a cheap tent and cutting it up some to make it work. |

A few years ago (at least 5 years) there was a booth at the vw classic Irvine ca. where they had there own designs for tents & curtains,& there was a rear tent that hanged on the rear hatch & used the same buttons to snap on around the opening then go all the way down to ground.
It looked like they designed it to stand inside & take showers. It had a zipper to get in & out from outside & a floor. very cool I went back the following year to buy one but they were not there & never saw or heard of that company again. I always think of how nice it would have been to have one.
So I just have settle for this shower tent from k mart
Its 3 x 3 by 8ft high i also put my port-a-potie in there |

I paid 170 for it, it is polished and looks very nice. I am not sure if the bus depot one is polished or not, they also said at Izz"s that they sell unopolished for 150. |

So how does the floor within the rear sleeper work? It would have to be about 4 feet by 4 feet. Thats larger than would fit back inside the bus unless it's in pieces. And how is it supported? What holds it up level with the interior floor? It would have to be strong and rigid. And a tent hanging off the rear hatch door wouldn't support it. _________________ 71 Superbug

We have that solved already. |
I was looking for info on the old VW rear sleeper from the '70's. Never found any photos of the platform. Although there were many photos of the exterior. Numerous people had them and some were on splitties. Evidently popular in Europe. I was a bit curious about the old ones. It would have been interesting to compare them with the design I worked around.
Regardless they are a handy, functional item. _________________ 71 Superbug
