Hi friends, desperately need some advice on which oil to use. I was told VW'S Quantum 10/40 semi synthetic is best. But will any 10/40 semi do:?:

"5/40 Delvac1" or "Mobil1 5/40 Diesel truck and SUV" or "Mobil1 5/40 Turbo diesel truck", they are all the same oil. Its good for any climate in North America, and is good for at least 7500 miles in TDI in a Vanagon, even one thats 4wd Wink .

Regarding the semi synthetic, don't use it, your TDI requires fully synthetic oil.

Thank jack. 5/40 is ok? I'm a newbie when it comes to engines. I wonder what the difference is and why the guy who sold it to me said 10/40...?

5/40 is a bit thinner at cold temp than 10/40.

The engine will run on normal oil, or semi synthetic, or full synthetic, the problem with normal oil/semi synthetic is that it will coke/burn around the top piston ring, then the ring will no longer move freely then the ring won;t seal properly, the compression will drop, it will be harder to start, it will smoke more, etc...

Shell Rotella Synthetic 5W40

Mobil Delvac 1 Synthetic 5W40

Amsoil makes one too, not sure of the name

Many others but those are the most common. Basically you need a diesel-specific synthetic 5W40 weight, should have CI-4 rating.

Since you are in Cyprus you might want to look for an oil that you can acquire locally. See what the local truck shops are using and maybe follow their lead.

we use rotella t on our tdi and we get about 8-10k between intervals. Not sure if running it on a syncro would change that, but it is great oil!
