The mounting holes all seem to be the same for the most part. some circular and most oval but i think they all measure in the area to fit beetle and bus...or whatever other vehicles they were designed for.
These are the examples I have found in passing. Like yours , Everett, youll notice the nubs(arrow) ,those I believe should sit inside the steer column outer casing for security/strength. then the lock shaft moves deeper in to lock inside the welded sleeve.
In these cases below, I think the lock shaft only has enough travel to move just past the outer casing ,not reaching a lock sleeve, in effect not locking the column. I would bet its all somewhat flimsy as well unless theres some sturdy donut to hold it all in place.
Was your lock actually set up to operate or just installed for appearance?

We've talked about this, but for reference in this thread, the bottom photo is mine. I took it (and others) of a typically listed "barndoor steering lock" to show how the lock doesn't fit a barndoor properly. Now someone is using it (in black/white) to slang the same wrong locks.
The middle photo is from a local guy who was selling that lock. He said it fit his 53 and worked. When he sent it to me the fit, and physical dimensions of the lock, were the same as the lock in the bottom photo. His bus is a 53, so *maybe* he had a larger tube, but that photo sure doesn't look like it does. |
