I've searched the forums but haven't found an answer. It looks like I can remove some shrouding and the crankshaft pulley and have easy access to the pump. The Bentley book says the engine must be out. I have a '69 Westy with a 1600dp.

You can do it.. but you also have to remove the "mustache bar" to get to the pump... this just means you have to block up the engine/transaxle on some good solid blocks to hold it up when you remove the outer mounts and the bar. Might have to take off the exhaust too to facilitate/make things easier.
