|
|
Pubished in the British national press today, was news of a new low-cost peoples's car from Volkswagen:
Ray Massey, Volkswagen unveils the 'baby Beetle', Daily Mail, Monday 10th September 2007.
Seventy years after creating the original Beetle, Volkswagen is to build another no-frills "People's Car" for the 21st century.
The tiny 11 1/2 foot-long four-seater will be unveiled tonight on the eve of the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Like the first Beetle, of which more than 21 million were sold, it will have its engine in the rear, with luggage space under the bonnet.
In China, India and other developing countries the car will cost around £4,000. In Britain and Europe it will cost around £5,000.
In the West it is likely to come with a three-cylinder petrol engine, with a two-cylinder engine offered elsewhere.
The car, which it is understood will be called the Up, is likely to come in both three and five-door guises and because of its light weight should manage an ultra-frugal 100 miles to the gallon.
It is thought Apple is also working on an "intelligent" version of the car with wi-fi internet access.

I would buy that car, I did not like the new beetles because of the front wheel drive / front engine. I do like that Up body design but would prefer them to shape a body more like a 50s to 60s bug. Now if we could get them to make a bus with the rear engine and affordable. |

Not really crazy about it myself. Wished that they would make it the best of both worlds, by taking this... And the newbeetle.. and combine it to one.
make it the same shape/style of the new beetle, but make it smaller like this car, with the rear mounted engine. _________________ Be kind to all critters. America's "H8TERZ" can drink sludgy used Motor Oil!

Returning the engine to the rear is a step in the right direction.
I’m assuming it’s going to be water-cooled? |

And in the US it'll cost 13,495 plus tag, tax, title, emissions, destination charge and dealer doc fee for a grand total of $16,854.73, minus any factory to dealer incentives. Rebate amount does not refund the sales tax to the buyer. Dealer keeps all rebates. Cashback offer does not apply to dealer stock. Vehicles must be ordered between October 13th and November 2nd, 2012 at 1:32AM GMT every day ending in U in order to receive 0.145% financing. YMMV, IMHO, IANAL _________________ Andy

Yup watercooled indeed.
I think it looks a lot like the Smart Car and the Mercedes A Class:
I will say though, if it's got decent power and ok MPG, it'd be a nice run around (considering eninge is in the back too!) |

The picture posted in this thread does not look like the actual "Up!"
The real Up! Looks a bit like a previous-generation Golf. _________________ 75 Deluxe Microbus - Finally alive and kicking!

It's a Yaris, and it's not rear-engine, there's more to a car than how it looks. |
